The Cairo Pharaohs finished this week in first place in the GBC. There is a long way to go in this season, but fans in Cairo are buzzing about their team in a way they typically don’t. The Pharaohs have never finished higher than third in the league and the way the team has played over the first five weeks of the season has given their fans hope that maybe this year will be different. A lot of things will have to go right, but they have at least set themselves up in a spot where they don’t have to play catch up after a rough start.
As for this week’s game action, the Pharaohs went 5-2. The offense struggled a bit this week after starting off hot, but the pitching picked up the slack, with two shutouts, two games in which the opponent only scored once, and one game where the staff only allowed two runs. They allowed six runs in each of the team’s losses.
Jason Hone pitched 3 scoreless innings and earned 2 wins. Antonio Ramirez pitched a brilliant game against London, allowing no runs on 1 hit with 2 walks and 8 strikeouts over 7.1 innings. David Torres pitched a great game against London as well, allowing 1 run in 8.1 innings. Grigore Balas was outstanding in both of his starts, with a combined 14 innings, with only 1 run allowed.
