Ok, in my last post I profiled the performance of the outfielders on the Brisas along with some of my thoughts around each player. Now, time to do the same exercise with my infielders. I am really finding that these posts are providing some value in terms of really understanding how I stand with each position group and what my most pressing needs will be going into best season.
After the infielders there will be another couple of these posts splitting the pitching staff (starters and releivers) and then going in depth on the players that I see as the most interesting prospects that we currently have in our organisation.
First, let's start with our Catcher position and only one player has had enough AB's to be of note.
Will Bennett is an ok catcher for this level. As you can clearly see his offensive profile is at best questionable with a lot of his value being provided by his defensive profile and outputs. This is despite a catcher arm rating of 4 so who actually knows at this point. I think that Bennett is serviceable but if we really want to kick on and be more than just potential challengers next year then Bennett should be a backup at best.
Now, on to our two 1B's who have played enough to be of note.
Ralph Simpson has the profile to be a star at this level and this shows in his performance profile. He is performing well in terms of raw output as he is in the 98th percentile for RBI's and the 95th percentile for HR's. This translates to a WAR so far this year of 4.4 which is in the 96th percentile for the league. He is a priority to bring back next season.
Irfan Umayr is at best a backup in the position. He is in the 93rd percentile for his BB% which drives his ability to get on base but for a 1B there is little else in the way of a true offensive profile. He goes in the bucket of players who are ok to have around but who do not have a medium to long term future at the Brisas.
Our 2B is next.
Sachdev Vajpeyi has done a serviceable job for the Brisas this year for a player whose best position is actually 1B. His performance profile has shown that he can generate some power and he is in the 75h percentile for RBI's and the 83rd percentile for HR's. The power and raw output comes with a risk though as is shown with his 5.7% BB% and 23.1% SO%.
At this stage my thoughts are to upgrade the position in the offseason and then move Vajpey over to backup the 1B position.
At 3B we have Jin-hwan Kim and as you can see from his performance profile he is good enough, just, to play the position for a team that wants to contend. His profile is somewhat strange as he is in the 88th percentile for BB% but also the 52nd percentile for SO%. He is a player that we are not in a rush to move on from and with 2.1 WAR (82nd percentile) he has been ok this year.
Unfornately the same cannot be said of our current SS.
Yeah, yikes. I know that i have just started using these profiles as a means to assess my roster but this is absolutely not the type of profile that you want to see from any player, let alone a player that is currently playing a premium position. This might be a player that does not even make it to the end of the year. No offensive product and a poor defensive performance. Not good, not good at all.
That's all for the hitters. The next post (once I have finished coding the pitcher performance cards and put everything in an app) will start to look at pitchers.
