This Brisas rotation was desperate for some magic, and they got it from Millard MacIndeor. The 32-year-old righty had never pitched in the GBC before this year, in fact, he hadn't even pitched in the minors since 2056 nor started a game since 2046. It's safe to say no one had heard of this man outside of Buenos Aires and Calgary until today. What a day it was though, 9 innings, 110 pitches, 6 hits (all singles), and 2 walks against Tokyo. He needed to as well, the final score being 1-0 to the Brisas. Let's take you through the special day shall we?
It all started off well for MacIndeor, a 9-pitch first with a strikeout, a pop-up, and a slightly scary fly ball to deep centre. Brisas' lineup hit three balls over 99mph in the first including a Greene double and Garrison single but unfortunately ended up with nothing to show for it. A 10-pitch 2nd including an E5 and a deep right fly and an 18-pitch 3rd with the first hit, a single through the 3-4 hole by Situ, left the fans content, this was not a bad start.
It got even better in the bottom of the third. Back up catcher Hal Cannon led off with a 4 pitch walk before platoon first baseman Zhi-gang Jung lines the first ball at 98.8mph into centre-field. This rally was somewhat stunted by Isacco Aglietti grounding into a double play. Starman Quinn Greene is intentionally walked to bring up the hottest batter in this lineup, Matt Garrison comes up with men on the corners. The RBI comes from an unlikely source however, Deron Alexander balks to allow Cannon to jog in. He's unable to recover either as Garrison reaches on the 7th pitch of the at-bat. Kwan-uk Chong is unable to convert though, as a deep fly ball between right and centre is caught to end the inning.
MacIndeor got better with the lead, 16 pitches and a single is all of note in the fourth and fifth innings. The sixth inning though was the diciest thus far as after retiring two batters in 8 pitches, he gives up a walk and two singles to load the bases for Izz al Din bin Najeeb, who despite his slow start is a scary sight for those watching. Thankfully, he flys out to centre to end the inning with the shutout still intact.
Two got on base in the 7th due to a single and a walk before Situ grounds into a double play. Before 3 flyouts in the 8th took MacIndeor to the 9th inning on 104 pitches. It was a brave decision to leave him out there, but he deserved that shot. The single off the first pitch to Mckay may have brought in some doubts but Najeeb grounding into a double play eased everyone's nerves. One man left, Gary Corless, his .120 batting average could've been confused as 5 or 6 times that the way the nails were being chewed in the stands. He took the first two pitches to get into a 1-1 count before swinging at the third pitch. 88.8 mph, just left of centre, and straight into the young centre fielder Amin Abdul-Halim's glove.
He'd done it, 110 pitches later the celebrations started (much to the distaste of Tokyo's manger) and the Brisas had clinched the series and reached 13-10 in the still young season. One thing is for sure though, this one will still be talked about at the end of the year.
