Now that the 2060 season is officially in the books, and it unfortunately did not end with Portland going back-to-back, the pressing question in the early portion of the off-season is what to do about the contract situation of Juan Marroquin. Marroquin has a team option deal for $13.6 million for the 2061 season. Some experts feel Portland will pick the option up because Marroquin keeps depth in the staff. Others feel Portland should cut loose the 36 year old who hasn't performed to his salary and use the money elsewhere.
"Last we heard, team officials are torn on the Marroquin decision" commented one individual with close ties to the front office. "Yeah, Marroquin's salary is higher than his current production but he's not been dreadful. He's won 26 games over two seasons while posting a 5.3 WAR total over that span. Those aren't bad numbers for a bottom of the rotation starter. What is bad is that $13.6 price tag. But Portland has room to roll with Marroquin if they so choose."
Portland's projected 2061 payroll with Marroquin on the staff is expected to be just over $87 million. With Marroquin returning, Portland would return 4 of their current 5 starters in the rotation. Steffan Gimsing would be the only departing member of the rotation. With all 9 position players back, there is still financial and roster flexibility even with Marroquin on the payroll.
The flip side of the argument according to insiders is that keeping Marroquin at $13.6 million would be a waste of resources if the possibility stands that you could get similar production from a cheaper pitcher. There are also those claiming that Mauro Esperanda can fill the void on a league minimum deal next year as could John O'Leary.
"There are many in the front office pushing to give them the chance and save the money" said the insider. "While both are capable arms, their league minimum cap hit is why others are claiming to keep Marroquin around for just one more season since the pitching staff likely won't need a major look until the 2062 season when Putachli hits arbitration and Wullenweber faces possible retirement.
