Porltand hurler Mike MacRobb got the news he feared. After leaving Sunday's game against Vancouver after pitching just 1 inning in the start, an MRI this week revealed the worst possible news. MacRobb left the game with pain in his throwing shoulder and the MRI revealed a torn rotator cuff. The injury will sideline the 39 year-old veteran for well over a year.
MacRobb was having another solid season for Portland in his 2nd go around with the team in 3 seasons. In exactly 100 innings pitched, he had posted a 3.96 ERA and 1.39 WHIP with a mediocre 5-6 overall record. His 2.1 WAR was his 4th highest single season WAR of his career and matched up well with the 2.0 WAR he put up with Portland back in 2055. Of his 18.1 career WAR over 14 seasons, 4.1 of that came in his two short stints with the Lumberjacks.
The injury raises major questions about MacRobb's future both with Portland and personally. He'll turn 40 before the start of next season. Mike had signed on for another year with Portland for $3.2 million in 2058. The injury to his shoulder, as most doctors have indicated, has at least a 15 month recovery and rehabilitation period which likely means MacRobb is done for all of 2058 as well.
"We're going to give MacRobb the off-season to decide his future" commented team AGM Kate Fiscus. "Obviously we'd like for him to retire, but he'd be foolish to do that and leave the $3.2 million on the table we owe him for next season. But with that said, we most likely won't be keeping him on the roster past the new year. We hate it for him and we were extremely pleased with the performances and effort he was providing us. But unfortunately that cap space can be used in other ways next season, assuming we have the financial flexibility and coverage to cut his salary and still add salary up to the cap."
The loss of MacRobb for next season means Portland only has 6 pitchers on their active roster heading into next season, and 5 of those 6 are arbitration arms. Most of which are on league minimum deals. The Lumberjacks are expected to have close to $60 million in cap space to try and build a staff next season, but there needs to be guys worthy of signing to contracts on the market in order to use that space.

Oh ya he’s done. He’ll be 41 before he can play again. He might have a 4 fastball by then.
