It’s Happening

Post by Krathan » Thu May 01, 2025 6:12 pm

Nathan Garrison woke from the cryochamber that had been brought into his office. He slowly sat up and looked around. His assistant, Jeannine, had prepared everything, just like he had requested. He made a mental note to thank her later.

Garrison reached out to his left, taking hold of the robe that had been placed there. He pulled one sleeve over his left arm and then pulled the bulk of the robe behind his body, placing the right shoulder of the robe on his own shoulder and slowly lifted himself out of the chamber. He then pulled his right arm through the sleeve and tied the robe around his body.

Garrison finished getting dressed and picked up the cup of room temperature water to begin the process of returning his body to its normal state. He sipped the water as he walked toward his desk, checking the date.

“That seems about right.”

He carefully paced around the room, getting used to moving again. It felt like he had been in the chamber for mere moments but he knew it had been much longer than that. He looked at the clock and shook his head.

“That won’t help. It’s not like the exact time was posted.”

He was starting to feel more stable and began to pick up the rate of his movement. His body began to warm. He continued to drink the water and lustily gazed at the temperature controlled coffee cup on his desk. He wanted to drink it now but knew that he had to wait. He would shock his system otherwise.

He picked up his cube and checked the app displaying his core temperature. It was rising slowly. He monitored it as he continued to walk around the room, drinking his water. It felt good, odd, but good. This was his first time using a cryochamber. He had been nervous before entering but he had done his research. He knew what precautions to take.

By the time he actually entered the chamber, his nerves were mostly memories. His only hesitation was the uncertainty of the timeline. How long would he be in there? Would Jeannine be able to get the news about the updated timeline and then adjust the chamber to wake him at the correct time?

He swiped at his cube and changed his view. He scrolled through the messages and found the one he was looking for.

“Sim day indeed!!”

It was odd terminology, calling it a sim, but it was what it was. That statement was the glorious signal that he had in fact been awakened on the right day. With any luck he would soon be going over reports of minor league free agents who had agreed to terms and contract agreements cancelling out the need to go to arbitration with those players who were eligible. Even if things didn’t go as planned, there would be something…anything happening. The world of the BBA was coming back to life. Every few years there was a transition in the league. The last one came with the news of the infamous V-25 and its seemingly never ending stream of bad player development, pitchers losing velocity, and young players fading into has-beens much too early.

There were rumors that 26 would be better. Much like on opening day, there was hope in the air. Everyone could feel it. Hope…but also a little fear. How would players react to this new environment? How would they develop? After spending the last couple of years working out a good approach to the development lab, things have changed. They would have to reevaluate that approach. It was said that defense would be harder to train, despite refining their methods. Helping a pitcher develop their secondary pitch would also be more difficult. Some things might be easier, but it was hard to tell. They might be able to try new programs but some of the programs they had tried in the past would no longer be available.

Garrison shook his head. He checked his core temperature. It had returned to normal. He smiled and walked to his desk to retrieve his coffee.

None of those worries mattered. The baseball world had returned. That was all that mattered. In a matter of hours, it would all be worth it. He had slept through the transition period in the cryochamber. He had avoided the pain of waiting and was now ready to move forward.

There for sure will be some shrinkage in the cryochamber.
