This is the ninth article in my series taking a look at the top prospects in my organization. This article will cover my starting pitchers.
I'm going to include Felipe Cummings on this list even though he officially pitched too many innings to retain his prospect status. He made his BBA debut this season with mixed results. He started 12 games with a 206 record and an ERA of 6.02. His 5.2 HR% was a big part of the problem and he will need to fix that if he wants to find success. He did have several very good starts, including a late July outing against Boise in which he allowed just 1 walk and 1 walk in 7.1 scoreless innings. The 24 year old still has room to grow into his potentials, 8/6/7/7 (Stuff/Movement/Home Runs Against/Control). He throws 6 pitches, 5 of which have either 8 or 9 potential. He has 4 stamina that has been listed as 5 at various points, leading me to believe it is likely a high 4/low 5. He will spend some time in the dev lab this offseason trying to get closer to those potentials.
The next prospect on my list is Emilio Carrillo. He was taken in the 1st round of the 2062 draft and spent the rest of the season splitting time between short A and A. He was fantastic in Adirondack, going 3-2 with an ERA of 0.59, pitching 46 innings across 8 starts, allowing just 3 earned runs total. He struggled in Danville, but only spent a limited amount of time there and most of the damage was done in 2 rough starts there, where he gave up 12 runs in 6.2 innings. In his other 3 starts, he allowed a total of 8 earned runs. The 19 year old right hander is not all the way to his potentials of 5/6/77, but he has high intelligence and work ethic. Carrillo did have some injury trouble in 2062 but is listed as normal. Hopefully that doesn't become a consistent problem. He throws 3 pitches with 6-7 potential, has 6 stamina, and a 60% GB%.
The third player on the list is John Miller. He was taken in the second round of the 2062 draft and split time between A and AA after the draft. The 21 year old right hander was 4-5 with a 3.71 ERA (95 FIP-) with Danville and 0-4 with a 5.04 ERA (96 FIP-) with New Bern. He throws 5 pitches with potentials ranging from 5-8. He has potential ratings of 6/7/7/5 and is close to reaching them but still has some development needed. Miller has a GB% of 59 and 4 stamina.
The next prospect on the list is Bill Johnson. He was taken in the third round of the 2062 draft and spent the rest of the year in short A. Johnson went 4-4 with a 2.25 ERA in Adirondack, starting 14 games. The 18 year old has some room to grow into his potentials of 6/5/6/6 with a 4 pitch mix, including three decent to good pitches and a below average changeup. He has 8 stamina and a GB% of 54.
The fifth prospect on the list is Pedro Martinez. He was taken in the fifth round of the 2061 draft and has pitched at the A and AA levels the last two years. In 2061, he went 7-4 with a 1.90 ERA in 19 starts with Danville. He was 6-7 with a 3.69 ERA inn 16 starts with New Bern this year before suffering a torn rotator cuff and missing the rest of the season. Martinez is close to reaching his potentials of 6/5/6/6 with 5 pitches with potential ratings of 6 or 7. Martinex has 8 stamina and a GB% of 50. Hopefully he can fully recover from his injury and fully develop.
The final prospect on the list is Saghir bin Fouad. He was a scouting discovery in January of 2062. He may not ever develop enough stuff to pitch at the big league level with a potential of just 3, but his 6 movement and 8 HRA are intriguing. He is 18 years old and currently in the IC.
