2072.76 Flyers Win Epic Cartwright Cup and Earn Trip to Monty Brewster Memorial Series

Post by Krathan » Sat Apr 19, 2025 9:06 am

The Charlotte Flyers return to the Monty Brewster Memorial Series after winning a thrilling 7 game series win in the Cartwright Cup against Atlantic Division Rival, the Charm City Jimmies. The Flyers will face the Nashville Bluebirds for the title of BBA Champions. The two teams faced off in the championship series in 2060 with the Bluebirds coming away with a 5-1 series win.

Charlotte won the Cartwright Cup based after a hard fought battle. This is a brief recap of the series.

Game 1 at Family Dollar Field: Buwono Mainaky vs Hector Silva

Silva was fantastic in game 1. He allowed just 4 hits and 1 walk. However, one of the hits was a solo home run by Domingo Chavez in the bottom of the 4th inning. Two of the remaining hits came in the 8th inning as Dallas Dixon doubled to lead off the inning and Jose Bedreddin singled to drive him in.

Mainaky pitched 6.1 scoreless innings and Luis Perez and Josh Dougherty held the Jimmies scoreless for the remaining 2.2 innings to secure the 2-0 win.

Game 2 at Family Dollar Field: Jacquot Natta vs Ian Tolley

Natta struggled, allowing a 2 run home run to Ramon Rodriguez in the first and another 2 run homer to Arturo Perez in the third. He allowed a solo home run to Dave Ackerman in the fourth and was pulled from the game with the Flyers trailing 5-1.

Charlotte got their first run in the bottom of the first on a Tony Villa home run. They scored 2 more in the bottom of the fourth on a Lawrence Stewart sacrifice fly and a Dallas Dixon single. The Flyers tied the game in the bottom of the second as doubles by Dixon, Wani Matos, and Bedreddin led to 2 more runs. Matos gave Charlotte the lead in the bottom of the eighth on a sacrifice fly.

With the Flyers leading 6-5 going to the ninth, they brought in closer Josh Dougherty, who just didn't have it. A walk was followed by a double, then an intentional walk that loaded the bases. Back to back singles by Ayvad Faisal and Kazunari Chikafuji and a wild pitch brought in 3 runs. Then Jose Cardozo homered to give Charm City a 10-6 lead. That would be the final score.

Game 3 at OLD BAY Park at Camden Yards: Bob Anderson vs John Mellon

Luis Guevara drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the second and Cardoza drove in another with a double in the third. Guevara added a second sac fly in the fourth and that was all Mellon would need.

Villa homered in the top of the eighth and Cardozo answered with one of his own in the bottom of the inning.

The Jimmies won 4-1 and led the series 2 games to 1.

Game 4 at OLD BAY Park at Camden Yards: Arturo Trevino vs Allen Davidson

The game was scoreless until the top of the sixth when Lawrence Steward doubled in a run an Dallas Dixon drove in 2 with a single giving the Flyers a 3-0 lead. All of the runs were unearned, scored with 2 out after an error by Lucio Guevara.

The Jimmies got 2 back on a 2 run home run by Chikafuji.

The two bullpens combined for 5.2 scoreless innings and Charlotte evened the series with a 3-2 win.

Game 5 at OLD BAY Park at Camden Yards: Buwono Mainaky vs Hector Silva

The Flyers got to Silva early in this one. With 2 mean on in the second, Dallas Dixon drove in 2 with a double and Jose Vargas brought Dixon home with a double of his own making the score 3-0.

The Jimmies got 1 back on a Guevara sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second.

Bandit Natta stretched Charlotte's lead back to 3 with an RBI single in the top of the third.

In the bottom of the third, Chikafuji led off with a solo home run Dave Ackerman scored on a groundout to make the score 4-3 Charlotte. Then Ramon Rodriguez drove in a run in the fourth to tie the game.

It stayed that way until the top of the eighth when Jose Vargas drove in two with a double and Ignacio Lewis brought Vargas in with a pinch hit single, putting the Flyers on top for good at 7-4. The series headed back to Charlotte with the Flyers up 3 games to 2.

Game 6 at Family Dollar Field: Jacquot Natta vs Ian Tolley

Chikafuji hit a 2 run home run in the top of the first and the Flyers answered with 2 of their own in the bottom of the inining on a homer by Jose Bedreddin.

The Jimmies went back on top in the third with a solo homer by Jose Cardoza and a sac fly by Ramon Rodriguez. Charm City was up 4-2 early and Bandit Natta had to leave the game with a forearm cramp.

Charlotte closed the gap to 2 with an RBI double by Loo Yang in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Dave Ackerman drove in a run with a single and Edgardo Reyes brought him in with a triple in the top of the 5th. Then Reyes raced home on a wild pitch to give Charm City a 7-3 lead.

Lawrence Stewart led off the bottom of the ninth with a solo home run but that was all Charlotte could manage and the Jimmies forced a game 7 with the 7-4 game 6 win.

Game 7 at Family Dollar Field: Bob Anderson vs John Mellon

Much like he had in game 6 against Montreal, Anderson pitched an outstanding game when the team needed him most. The big right handed went 8 innings, allowing just 5 hits, 1 walk, and 1 run while striking out 7.

The Flyers only managed 5 hits of their own. They only needed 1 hit to score their first run in the bottom of the third. Vargas walked to lead off the inning. After the next 2 batters struck out, Bedreddin singled and Chavez walked to load the bases. With Bandit at the plate, Mellon uncorked a wild pitch and Vargas came in to give Charlotte a 1-0 lead.

The Jimmies finally broke through against Anderson in the top of the seventh when Guevara drove in Ackerman with a sacrifice fly. The game was tied at 1.

Ben Graybill led off the bottom of the eighth with a single but the next 2 batters struck out. That's when Domingo Chavez drove in the eventual winning run with an RBI single.

Josh Dougherty pitched a perfect ninth to cement the win and send the Flyers to the Monty Brewster Memorial Series.

Thanks Ron. I’ve won two really close series against two great teams. Now my guys have to find a way against the biggest behemoth of the current era.
