The Charlotte Flyers started this week 1 game out of first place in the Atlantic Division and ended the week 1.5 games behind the leader. The leader of the division has changed during that time. Montreal was in first place but now sits in third, 2.5 back, while Charm City now sits atop the division. The Jimmies went 4-1 on the week. The Blazers went 1-4. The Flyers went 3-2. Let's take a look at the 5 games Charlotte played.
The Flyers started the week with a 4 game series in Brooklyn, the team sitting at the bottom of the Atlantic Division looking to play the spoiler role.
The series opener saw the Robins get off to a fast start, with 2 runs in the first and another in the third on a solo home run by Emilio Morales, Jr. The Flyers battled back, with 2 solo home runs by Jose Bedreddin and tied the game in the seventh inning. Luis Perez allowed Morales, Jr. to hit another home run in the eighth and took the loss in a 4-3 final. Jacquot Natta left the game with an injury in the fifth inning.
The next game was a struggle for Ignacio Lewis. He allowed 5 runs on 6 hits, a walk, and a Jorge Cano home run as the Robins jumped out to an early 5-0 lead. Charlotte scored 6 times in the fifth, highlighted by a 3 run double hit by Domingo Chavez and went up by a run. Brooklyn answered back in the bottom of the sixth and the game remained tied until the bottom of the 9th when Emilio Morales, Jr. hit a walk-off sacrifice fly against Charlotte closer Josh Dougherty to win the game 7-6.
The Flyers got back in the win column with a blowout victory in the next game.Ghumer Angara got a surprise start and pitched quite well for 4.2 innings but it was Arturo Trevio who was credited with the win, pitching 1.2 scoreless innings in relief. Jorge Trujillo hit 2 home runs and drove in 5 as Charlotte won the game 10-2.
Charlotte completed the series split with a come from behind victory in the finale. Down 4-2 in the top of the fourth inning, Jorge Trujillo hit a two run shot to tie the game. Dallas Dixon homered in the fifth and the Flyers added another run in the ninth to cap off the 6-4 win.
Sunday marked the beginning of a home series against the Jacksonville Zombies. Jacksonville starter Takehide Gertrudes was very good, but Arturo Trevino matched him and the game was tied at 1 after nine innings and went into extras. It ended up taking thirteen innings for this one to be decided. Rookie outfielder Tony Villa crushed a solo home run off of former Flyer Ruben bin Majid al Din with 1 out in the bottom of the thirteenth for a walk-off 2-1 win.
