The Flyers ended up splitting their series in Charm City and their home series against Cape Fear. Last week ended with a Flyers victory in the series opener against the Jimmies, meaning that during this week of play, the team went just 3-4.
Game 1: Bob Anderson faced Charm City in his last game as a member of the Zombies and got knocked around, allowing 6 runs on 9 hits in 5.2 innings. His first start with Charlotte was also against the Jimmies, but it was a much more successful outing. Anderson trew 6.2 innings, allowing just 1 run on 4 hits and a walk while striking out 7. Unfortunately for the Flyers, John Mellon only allowed 1 run in his 5 innings of work and the game remained tied into extra innings. Antonio Santiago ended up taking the loss as Dave Ackerman drove in the winning run with a walk-off sacrifice fly.
Game 2: Buwono Mainaky only allowed 4 hits, but one was a two run home run and another was a solo homer. The Flyers battled back, and tied the game with back to back home runs by Domingo Chavez and Ben Graybill in the 8th inning.Once again, the two teams needed extra innings to determine a winner. Rookie southpaw reliever Jose Gonzalez took the loss, allowing his first run of the season when Kazunari Chikafuji ended the game with a walk-off home run with one out in the bottom of the 11th.
Game 3: Charlotte jumped out in front early in the series finale as Tony Villa and Jorge Trujillo each hit an RBI single in the 1st inning and then came home to score on a 2 run double by Wani Matos. Villa and Trujillo each drove in another run later in the game as well, and Jacquot Natta earned the win allowing just 1 earned run in 8 innings of work.
Game 4: Former Charlotte draft pick Juan Hernandez gave the Swamp Foxes an early lead with a 3 run home run off of Ignacio Lewis in the top of the 1st. Bandit Natta homered, Tony Villa and Jorge Trujillo each had 3 hits. It wasn't enough. Cape Fear held on to win 8-6.
Game 5: Charlotte's backup catcher, Reynaldo Fernandez went 4-4 with 3 doubles and 2 RBI while Arturo Trevio threw 4.2 quality innings. Ghumer Angara got the win despite allowing 2 runs in 2 innings and Josh Dougherty picked up the save with a scoreless 9th. It was Dougherty's 36th save of the year, tying him with Alejandro Chavez for the most in a single season in Charlotte franchise history.
Game 6: Domingo Chavez and Jose Villa each homered, helping overcome an underwhelming start by Bob Anderson. The bullpen shut down the Swamp Foxes with 5.1 scoreless innings and the Flyers won the game 7-5. Dougherty took sole possession of the team's single season record with a perfect 9th to secure his 37th save of the campaign.
Game 7: The Flyers could just not get anything going against Cape Fear starter Jose Barron or reliever Nasir al Din bin Sahir. Charlotte was held to just 5 hits and 1 run while Buwono Mainaky struggled, giving up 5 runs in just 5.2 innings. The big blow was a 2 run home run by Sam Butler.
The initial Battle for Carolina ended with the Swamp Foxes taking 8 of 14 games in the regular season. Cape Fear went 5-2 at home, while the Flyers went just 4-3 at Family Dollar Field.
