HoF Voting - Eligibility Ends 2065

Post by RonCo » Thu Apr 24, 2025 2:27 pm

With the HoF Voting officially open, I thought I'd try to release a few "Candidate Threads." There are so many interesting guys on the list, though, that it's hard to get into details on them all, so I thought I'd try a different take and trace their paths through the voting maze. What follows are players, and what percentage of the vote they have gotten each year of eligibility

Here are players who all are on their 4th of seven seasons of eligibility:

BBA HOF VotingYr 1Yr 2Yr 3Yr 4Yr 5Yr 6Yr 7
Mike Campbell54.3%66.5%39.5%
Ricardo Rivera40.0%42.5%44.7%
Tiernan O'Macken28.6%27.5%36.8%
Gary Allen0.0%7.5%5.3%
Quant Kouros11.4%10.0%7.1%

Of these players, Kouros and O'Macken are probably the two highest profile in that they received a lot of pixelated ink during their careers. Both are unicorns of sorts, Kouros a fleet-footed Greek, and O'Macken playing Holmes to de'Medici's Sherlock. Or was that vice versa? Whatever. Allen and Campbell played under the radar screen, but were remarkable hitters--the voters rightly (IMO) acknowledging Campell more firmly. Rivera was known, but a bit overshadowed by a few cohorts (as well, as I recall, derailed a bit by injury).

Predictions:

- Allen and Kuoros fall off the ballot.
- Campbell's fall was intense last year, and I expect it to decline. I hope/expect he'll hang on for another ballot, but it's not impossible to see him fall off.
- Rivera and O'Macken have both gained vote totals every season they've been eligible, but not at the rate needed to catch the eye. I suspect both will see support decline. O'Macken has generally been 20% below de'Medici. If that continues, I'm guessing he's in danger of falling off the ballot. Doubtful, but possible. I suspect Rivera will be here for another season at least.

I voted for Campbell originally (I think), but didn’t make my top-10 the past couple seasons with loaded classes.

Me too. Too many better players on the list now. He may never make it.

I think if either reliever doesn’t make it the veteran’s committee will do the right thing and put them in.

What Veterans Committee?? I had suggested such a concept but the consensus I thought was no?

Because if this is an idea again I have a pitch I've been sitting on for a while now.

Kouros was my only vote from this group, and he probably ultimately won't make it, but come on. Those 944 steals deserve more recognition.

I'll link the all-time steals leaderboard here, just for fun. Besides Mons Raider, Kouros is the only one in the top twenty (which is as far as I checked) with a lifetime SB success rate above 80%.

SB have always been a hard sell for the voters. I made a big push for Zebidiah Williams back in the day.

This is because everyone slavishly follows the idea that attempting to steal bases is a bad thing. More of that set of analytics that may have improved winning but destroyed my interest in watching baseball. Fortunately, that tide seems to be turning.

The tide is turning because the rules changed, and rules changes alter the dynamics of what it takes to score runs.

2062 RESULTS:
Pretty close.

Gary Allen did fall off the ballot. Quant Kuoros hung on at 8%. Campbell, too, fell to 8%.

O'Macken stayed fairly steady (like de'Medici), so that was off a little. Rivera fell, but remains on the ballot.

So, 3.5 outta five isn't too bad.
