WOLVES ASG WRAP-UP: FELLERS DELIVERS, FRICK WINS 2-1!
What a game, what a night, what a hit! With the game knotted at one apiece in the bottom of the 8th, Madison’s very own right fielder Gary Fellers stepped into the batter’s box and made every Wolves fan puff their chests just a little more. Facing a 1-2 pitch, Fellers laced a clean single into right, scoring Alfonso Gonzales and giving the Frick League a 2-1 lead they’d never surrender. That RBI ended up being the game-winner in front of a roaring Des Moines crowd of 54,771.
“You never forget your first All-Star knock,” Fellers said postgame, probably. “Especially when it wins the dang thing.”
SCENE REPORT: GERTIE AMONGST THE GLITTERATI
Now, I may be a humble, hardened ball lady, but I can schmooze with the best of ‘em when the hot dogs are footlong and the drinks are bottomless. I spent a solid chunk of the 6th inning rubbing elbows with league brass down in the Kum Go Kourtyard, which is exactly as classy as it sounds.
Met up with that Southern slickster Chad Nason of the Nashville Bluebirds—still can’t tell if he’s charming or trying to sell me a used boat. And guess what? I found myself a new best-est GM buddy in none other than Phoenix’s elusive Sean Marko, who emerged from his Sonoran lair to grace the festivities. We chatted about everything from player development to cactus injuries and folks, I think we may have a handshake alliance in the works. You’ve been warned, Tallons.
Now back to reality—we still gotta play out the rest of this season, and it won’t be won on cocktails and compliments. But for one night in Des Moines, it felt like the Wolves were kings. And sometimes, one hit’s all it takes to remind you why you love this damn game.
