Daffy wins #18, hits 3-run double
Hawai'i wins #79 as Hoot hunts for 1st winning season
September 4
Carolina
1b Dwayne Johnson and Lf Niguel Halime hit back-to-back home runs
in the 2nd inning, but perhaps the most disconcerting hit for Carolina's club came
four batters later when Daffy MacNeill hit a ground ball past the the third base
bag that scored Reyes, Bobke, and Clark. The hit chased starter Buford Kessinger.
An inning later, Carolina intentionally walked ss Bobke with two outs to face MacNeill.
Daffy struck out with the count full.
His next time at bat, in the 6th, reliever Eric Teske plunked MacNeill after having
retired two quick, easy outs. Hawaii manager Chavez raised his eyebrows but
refrained from taking the field.
A half inning later MacNeill plunked Kosuke Fukudome with a runner on third and
no out. Retaliation? Daffy denies it, Chavez denies it. Guillen followed with a run-
scoring single and the game continued without another HBP.
MacNeill (18-4, 2.50) won his 13th decision in a row; he raised his season average
to .203. He struck out 10.
"I tell y'all what," Hoot said, "that boy's a triple threat."
Pedro Berrios hit a two-run shot in the 9th to finalize the score, 7-1, as Hawai'i
defeated a southpaw for the 3rd straight time.
The two-game series concludes tomorrow. Al Hoot is in search of his first winning
season as GM of the Tropics.
