It’s been a disappointing start for Charlotte so far, sitting 8-9 despite a run differential of +12. The main problem is the Flyers are 2-7 in 1 run games. The offense has generally played well, scoring the 5th most runs in the JL, but the pitching staff has been more inconsistent.
The bullpen has had some excellent outings mixed with a few meltdowns. Most of the starting rotation has at least been solid. Nic Rivers, on the other hand, has been awful.
Rivera has allowed 20 hits, 8 walks, and 13 earned runs in just 12.2 innings over 3 starts. The Flyers have announced that Rivers will be moved into a long relief role in the bullpen, with left handed pitcher Mitch Bond moving into the rotation in his place.
Charlotte will also be moving away from the 6 man rotation they have been employing so far this year. With Bond moving into the rotation and Rivers moving to the pen, there is one other change to the roster of starters. Salvador Montáñez, tied for the team lead with 2 wins, will miss the rest of the season with a partially torn UCL.
Replacing Montanez on the roster is Charlotte’s all-time saves leader Alejandro Chavez. He was signed to a minor league contract with a major league option during the offseason and will be paid $1.7 million now that he has been promoted to the big league club.
