In what has been an intriguing year of parity so far in the Frick, Sacramento finds themselves flying under the radar a bit. With all of the debates involving Portland and Vancouver, the Popes find themselves in a lot better position. A key to this has been them getting some better offense as well as their pitching returning to form. When GM Ben Heuring spoke to the media as the Popes landed in Louisville for the start of their road trip to face the Sluggers and Bluebirds, he was eager to talk.
"I like how we have been able to rebound from a frustrating season last year. It's been fun to fly under the radar in what should be a competitive race, and our goal remains to get into the playoffs seeded as high as possible. And personally, I know that the best way to show that I am the right man in this GM seat is to win. I feel a lot more comfortable and understand that I have to make this team my own. This week is going to be a key one for us. Louisville has been impressive this year, and Nashville is of course the team you have to get by if you want to be competitive in the Frick."
As for the debate between Portland and Vancouver about the Mounties being for real, Heuring wasn't answering that. "I can't say anything about what Chris and Aaron have been arguing about. My focus is on making sure that we have the best possible team, and I like where things are going. Our outfield is playing well, and bin Mus'ad has been providing a lot of offensive pop. If you aren't considering the Mad Popes as strong contenders this year to win the Pacific, then I don't know what to tell you."
