Bing-ying ‘Bye Bye’ Yen pitched six strong innings for Nashville allowing just a run on three hits and a walk. Trops starter John Avery also gave up just a run on five hits and a walk with six Ks in 5.1 innings.
Bluebirds reliever Jose ‘Satan’s Whelp’ Torres put up three scoreless inning against the Tropics while Ricardo Sanchez matched that with 2.1 clean innings with three Ks against the ‘Birds.
The pivotal moment came when Hawaii reliever Martin ‘Lumps’ Garcia walked Michael Cantu to begin the home half of the 10th. Garcia was pulled in favor of Alex Garcia. Garcia induced a 6-3 ground out, but Cantu moved to second. Garcia induced another ground out 3-1 that moved Canti to third. Garcia was told to intentionally walk Alfonso Gonzales to face Carter ‘Fortnite’ Cramer. Garcia’s first pitch was wild but corralled by Bob Webb for ball one. Garcia then uncorked another pitch that was even further outside, but Webb couldn’t get to it and went to the wall behind home plate far enough to score Cantu with the game winner.
Webb was 1 for 4 with a double (6) and Harry Surface was 2 for 4 with a solo homer (5) in the 1st inning.

The Tropics gave a chance to Boise’s 2055 #1 pick (15th overall) and received a fantastic returns.
Harry Spurlock tossed seven solid innings against the defending champs and gave up just two runs on three hits. He walked two and struck out three batters in just 81 pitches. Cale Cote came on for 1.1 scoreless innings with a walk and a K then Utkan Gocek earned the win in extras after throwing 1.2 clean innings with three Ks.
Hawaii scored the go ahead run after a lead-off double by Carlos Sanchez and a triple by Carlos Schumann. Harry Surface followed with a double that scored Schumann with an insurance run that Hawaii wouldn’t need.
The Tropics and Bluebirds split the four-game series.
This series didn’t begin well but the pitching stepped up and got it done to avoid a massacre. Spurlock was offered a minor league contract with a $100K bonus and put him in AA Carson City. He excelled there and his movement and HRA bumped a point. We caught a break.
