The Hawaii Tropics bats were left at the spring training complex in Naples, Florida as Sacramento pulls a bad April Fool’s joke to open the season. Mad Popes starter Michihiro Tanaka allowed Hawaii’s offense just a run on five hits over 7.2 innings. Claudio Torres came on in relief to shut the door on the Trops with 1.1 scoreless.
New Hawaii starter Nalany Ahotaein gave up three runs on six hits and a walk with five Ks in 5.1 innings but gets tagged with a loss in his 1st start as a Tropics. Alex Garcia stumbled through his 1.1 innings of work allowing a run on two hits with a K. Bob Westbrooks picked up where he left off last season with a scoreless inning and a K.
Carlos Schumann was 1 for 3, scored a run and 2B Miguel ‘Thrillseeker’ Martinez was 0 for 2 with a sac fly RBI.

Mad Popes pitching makes the Hawaii offense spew more pea soup and win Game 2 going away. Sacramento starter Mario Reyes gave up three runs on five hits and three walks to the Trops while fanning six batters on his way to his 1st win of the season.
Hawaii starter John Avery, another off-season acquisition, gave up four runs on six hits and a couple of walks with two Ks to fall to 0-1. Jose ‘Mr. Reliable’ Valle let the game get out of hand allowing three runs on five hits in an inning of relief. Semih Gurani pitched 2.2 innings allowing an unearned run on a hit and a walk.
Schumann is one of the few Trops that is hitting right now and was 2 for 3 and scored a run. ‘Thrillseeketr’ Martinez was 1 for 3 and scored a run. CF Carlos Sanchez was 2 for 4 with two ribbies.

The Sacramento Mad Popes walk it off against Hawaii to get a series sweep to open the season. Trops reliever Bob Westbrooks gave up two runs on four hits and a walk to give the game away top the Mad Popes. It ruined the Brewster debut of Hawaii starter Hector Estrada. Estrada gave up two runs on four hits and two walks with a K in 5.2 innings but left the game with the game tied 2-2. Marty Pearce threw 15 pitches to set down four batters with two Ks.
Schumann continues to do his part going 2 for 3 and scored a run. Carlos Sanchez was 1 for 4 with two RBI and stole a base (1). LF Ricardo Lopez was 3 for 4 with an RBI and swiped two bags. C Armando Medina was 1 for 4 with a double (1) and scored a run.
The Mad Popes sweep the three-game series against the Hawaii Tropics.
Hawaii’s offense managed just 1 extra base hit in the series and struck out 22 times while drawing just 5 walks. That’s the recipe for 0-3.
