2063.24 New Bern Bears Season Recap

The New Bern Bears finished the 2063 season with a record of 61-79, in 5th place in the Mid-Central Division, 23 games behind the division winner. The Bears were 7 games over .500 at the end of May but really fell off after that, including a 6-23 record in July. This was 20 games worse than their 2062 season. The Bears were 5th in the league in runs scored and 5 in runs allowed.

POSITION PLAYER OF THE YEAR:

Last year's recipient was Pablo Vasquez, who spent the 2062 season in New Bern again, but he struggled to a-0.9 WAR.

The 2063 winner is Salvador Anzar. Anzar broke out in a big way this season, posting 4.5 WAR, equalling the combined total of his minor league WAR from 2058-2062. Anzar slashed .313/.407/.569, with 34 doubles, 30 home runs, 86 RBI, and a wRC+ of 155.

PITCHER OF THE YEAR:

Last year's winner was Francisco Ocasio, who returned to New Bern in 2063 but was less successful.

The 2063 winner is Bill Johnson. Johnson was one of two well performing starters, along with Issam bin Numair, who ended up on the Injured List for the second half of the season. Johnson started 14 games this year, posting a record of 9-0 with an ERA of 2.57. He was an All-Star this season as well.


League Awards:

Salvador Anzar finished 3rd in the WCL DNL Jorge Olivas Batter Award voting.
Benton Sims won the WCL DNL Brad Aramathal Glove Award at Pitcher.
Bill Johnson and Salvador Anzar were both selected to the Warren Cox League All-Star Game.
