TN 62.02 Is Jorge Herrera Your Joe Gillstrom Newcomer of the Year?

Post by Chuck V » Tue Apr 08, 2025 6:27 pm

Even though he was the #6 overall pick just two years ago. How much can you expect of a guy with the nickname “Rumproast”? Well, if the numbers are any indication, you may be able to expect a Newcome of the Year Award?

Jorge Herrera has torn up the league. He is leading the Johnson League in hitting, OPS, OPS+ and rOBA. He is second in OBP% and is third in SLG%. Not bad for a rookie. His .357 average, 30 HR and 100 RBI have not only put him at the top of the conversation for NOY, but even has him with an outside hot at MVP! The accolades for Herrera are piling up. He has collected two JL Rookie of the Month awards, was named to the 2062 JL All-Star team, managed a 20 game hit streak, and all at the tender age of 21.
Herrera has some help along the way. He worked with Manager David Pinto in the offseason on outfield defense and on contact and the results of that extra training were evident from Opening Day.
Herrera’s closest competition may be George Stickler, Domingo Chavez and Gtuda Choppa. Choppa, a Phoenix Talon could win on cool name alone. He has 45 HR this year but trails in almost every other category. He is hitting a very respectable .313 with 45 homers and a league leading 134 RBI. Yet, his average, on base percentage, OPS and WAR are all far behind Herrera and San Antonios George Stickler. Stickler has put up a season not to be sneered at. He is third in the league with a .348 average, 36 home runs and 111 RBI. He is also not far behind in on base percentage and just ahead in WAR 6.9 to 6.7. Chavez has an excellent season as well especially for a middle infielder, but is behind Herrera and Stickler in average and HR as well as OBP, SLG and OPS. He is right up there in WAR though.
It will be a close race for NOY this year, but in this scribes completely biased and unobjective opinion, the nod goes to Jorge Herrera.

I edited it to include Chavez. His numbers are behind Stickler and Herrera in most categories though.

But he plays second base. He’s right there in WAR.
