"I have no idea," said a visibly annoyed Aaron Burnette, the Las Vegas Hustlers Assistant General Manager. "No....no....not once," Burnette spoke into the phone, the other side of the call not audible. "Listen, I want to know where he is as much as you if not more.....but.......but......I know......well, I suppose I'm in charge. Ok." Burnette ended the call. Letting out a deep sigh, he said aloud to no one in particular "Where in the World Is Recte?"
Matt Rectenwald, the Hustlers' eighty-eight year old chief executive, had not shown up at the office this season. Not once. He has not spoken to anyone, he has not sent any messages. There's been no interviews, no comments, absolutely no discretion from him at all.
"Who the hell am I to run the show," mused Burnette. At age thirty-nine, he is in his third year as Hustlers AGM. "I don't know what to do. I've called everyone. No one knows where he is. I can't find anyone who has actually spoken to him since the end of last season. Heck, I even traded for a guy we didn't even need just to see if that might get a reaction out of him. I'm at a loss."
To his credit, Burnette has done enough to keep the Hustlers in the mix. "We've dealt with some injuries, like every team," he explained. "I've had to tinker with the pitching staff a lot (Vegas has used twenty-one pitchers already this season). Carlos Berrera just came back from elbow reconstruction surgery, and that's a huge addition. Heck, he was third in the Nebraska voting last year and he just made his first start. To be honest, I'm just trying not to screw things up."
Burnette is being modest. He's taken some chances that perhaps Recte wouldn't have.
1) Playing Tadataka Yoshikawa primarily at third base. He's been a -7 ZR there, but it allows more bats in the lineup.
2) Giving Angel Trejo the full time left field position and the leadoff spot. He's slashing .323/.359/.538 with 45 doubles and 15 homers. "I think he's established now," said Brunette with a wry grin.
3) Demoting Alejandro Chavez from the closers role and elevating an emergent Rafael Gonzalez. "The kid blossomed, it's not like we expected it," said Burnette. "Alejandro has been pretty cool about it, at least so far."

Your team still playing well even when you're "gone" says a lot about how it's constructed.
