BBA Novel in Process? (Try #2)

I’ve said before that I owe the BBA a book. I did the PEBA things (See the PEBA on $25 a Day, and Chasing the Setting Sun), and they were great fun. Then I proceeded to take on the BBA a few years back. Unfortunately, in mid-book I had the first of what would be a series of difficult family events (in that case, my mother fell and broke her hip). The process dissolved.

Now, though, I think I’m coming out of things a bit, and I’m feeling a BBA book coming on. I know the powers at work and the basic premise, but have no idea of what's going to happen otherwise.

So there we are.

I still owe the BBA a book, and I think it's time to pony up.


What Does This Mean To You?

Well…maybe nothing. But here’s the thing. When I write a book, I eventually publish it commercially. Not that this is going to fly off the racks, but that means that anything I include in the book itself has to be officially mine. If you’ve read PEBA and Sun you’ll know that I used the real names of GMs of these teams. I would absolutely love to add you each as characters (or, since I don’t know exactly what the story is, as many you as makes sense). Just like with the PEBA books, however, I will not do that, however, if you do not want to be referenced and do not give me permission to do so. Bottom line: if you would like your persona used in the book’s storyline, I need your permission, and your agreement that I am allowed to use your persona free and clear of any financial claims. I promise not to make anyone a horrible person. Or, at least not horrible in horrible ways, unless, I suppose, you want me to...if so, see below.

So, to be direct, please either PM me directly or drop a note here to confirm that you are okay with me including you. Otherwise I will be sure to avoid any direct reference.


What Will Happen Next?

Most likely I’m going to post a thread someplace (maybe Features?), and that thread will be a place where I drop the first draft of everything I do. I should note that (as you see in my posts) my first drafts are very all over the place, and often full of both typos and weak writing. But what they most importantly are is “done.”

This means you’ll be able to follow the story as it comes to me.

Feel free to chat about it in the thread. If you do, though, and I pick up an idea from you, you are giving me authority to use that idea. I will not use your words as written unless they are a direct quote in context, and if I want to do that I’ll ask you for explicit permission. I'm not trying to be jerk here. I'm writing this thing as a labor of love, though, and I don't intend to deal with legal haggling when it comes to the commercial side of it. It's 100% fine if you don't want to participate, but if you do, I want it to be completely above board that you are authorizing me to use and riff off any ideas you bring up.

By accepting inclusion, you are giving me that freespace to weave things into the story.

Once the whole thing is done, I’ll close the thread and then put it into my re-write and production process…which will change things to a degree, and almost certainly happen off-line. At that point, I will likely Kickstart it, or otherwise launch it.

We shall see.
