Tom Miller has been quite the enigma for the Mounties. With his stamina many figured his career would be in the bullpen. Instead I made him into a starter and he's done well enough to earn a three year extension starting this season, buying out two free agent years. We had a meeting in my office today just after Hinkle's. He pretty much knew what it was gonna be about.

"A lot of these guys look up to you but say you sometimes loaf around the clubhouse."

"What can I say, I'm just that damn good."

"Maybe so, but we need you to really step up and take the captain role. I don't want to keep Butrus bin Issam here any longer. Don't need three damn catchers."

He's considered to be a natural born leader but seemed to be missing something. We talked some more and he eventiually agreed to some sort of program to help him get rid of his loafing. Fortunately during the offseason I was able to send him to the toughest camp in the world...

With his work ethic in need of work he learned it there. With a wake-up call for coffee at 8:00am and only one nap time per day it's Canada's place to take those you call "lazy" and put them to work. You even have to say please and sorry for any minor inconvenience. And if you're caught being lazy? Straight to the Tim Hortons where you have to work a 10 hour shift with no breaks. So after being there a whole 48 hours, Miller came back a changed man.

"PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD NEVER SEND ME THERE AGAIN, I'LL WORK HARDER TO BE A CAPTAIN JUST KEEP ME AWAY FROM THERE. IF I SEE ANOTHER TIM'S CUP IN MY LIFE I WILL DIE."
