Set all media contracts to the same amount

Post by DaveB » Mon Jul 15, 2024 11:46 pm

We’re in a cap league. There isn’t a reason why Louisville makes 21 million less than the league leaders. It’ll close the gap between the haves and have nots.

The national contract is all the same, which is about 80% of the media contract. The local contracts vary.

Can we just set everything up to be the same national and local. I don’t see why we have such a discrepancy in the media deals. There’s 8 teams that can’t even reach the 120 million for the cap.

This does seem right. I'm not sure why we would have this kind of disparity. If there's a justification for it I'm on board, but I can't think of a logical reason it should exist.

If there isn't a reason, there should be a discussion of the correct amount. Dave's guideline of "reaching $120 million" seems like a good baseline.

If the Board doesn't think locking it in makes sense, at least a reset and then let it electric slide again for a bit because the disparity is literally enough to cover draft, staff, and dev lab for "free" for the highest clubs.

I agree this sounds like something that should be looked at.

We were locked for a decade and it worked well.

If we ever choose to lock again, we should give big budget teams a season's notice because it's going to make a major sea tide shift. For example, the top media contracts are $80+M. We locked to $60M before. That would mean those teams are going to lose $20M+ off the top as soon as it's implemented.

That’s awesome. I assume effective this off-season for our 2061 budgets?

I think this is a good idea, whether it remains fixed or floats again and is reset every so often.

To help folks on both ends of the spectrum plan, is the idea to bring everyone up to the highest figure or set a number that raises some and lowers others? It would help everyone plan if it's known whether their revenue is going to take a bump or a hit. We don't need exact figures but just a general thought to help guide us would go a long way, especially when we get to the trade deadline.

That’s a big reduction, right? I think we’ll have a lot of teams under the cap and this will move player wages downward. Which I think is cool and more realistic to real life, just noting it’s a large drop for all teams.
