Galaxy Gas 2059.17 - Valencia Takes Two of Three in Series with SFB

The Stars made the short trip to San Fernando for a three game set this week. The Stars started the series with a record of 13-17 while the Bears started at 15-15.

Game 1 of the series was a pitcher’s duel with no score on either side through 6 innings. That changed with two outs in the bottom of the 7th inning as RF Tommy Harrison belted a 2-run shot off of Juan Garcia. The Stars did close the gap to one run on a fielder’s choice by Miller Shed, but the Bears added an insurance run in their half of the 8th to close out the scoring at 3-1. Bob Butler (1-1) gained the win in relief while Juan Garcia (2-4) was the hard-luck loser allowing 2 runs over 7.1 innings.

In game 2 the Stars got a quicker start by getting two runs in the first on a RBI single by 1B Kenny Blackwell and a sac fly by 3B Tim Bartlett. Valencia added another run in the third by Bartlett. The Bears responded with a run in the 3rd and a run in the 5th to close the score to 3-2 before both teams’ pitchers closed down the scoring for the rest of the game. Xavier Vargas (3-2) was credited with the win allowing 2 runs in 6 innings. Martin Roman gained his 10th save of the season in 10 opportunities while Arnold Cantrell (2-2) absorbed the loss.

In the third game of the series, the Stars scored in the first on a sac fly by 2B Miller Shed. The visitors would strike again in the 5th on another sac fly off the bat of Mark Kimball. That is all the scoring that Valencia would muster, but that is all that Stars’ starter Reynold Voermans (2-3) would need as he hurled 7.2 scoreless innings, scattering 5 hits while striking out 7. Martin Roman picked up his 11th save by pitching 1.1 innings and completing the shutout.
