59.04 Commissioner’s Office Voids Isa, al Din Signings
Bob Breum looked at his phone. It was the commissioner’s office calling. WTF did they want? It was almost never good news when they were calling you.
“Hello?”
“Bob, this is Matt.”
Holy Cow! This wasn’t just the commissioner’s office. This was the Commissioner himself calling! Now he was truly concerned. He sat down.
“Hello, Commissioner. To what do I owe the honor this evening?”
“Bob, a number of the other owners have raised concerns about your recent signings. They have suggested that you communicated with the players and/or their agents while they were still under contract to their previous teams. In other words, they are accusing you of tampering.”
“That’s absurd. Is this because we signed Mas’ud based on our London ties? He’s like a grandson to me.”
“No, it’s much more serious than that. Our investigators have evidence that suggests widespread tampering by your organization.”
“Commissioner, I …”
“Bob, let me finish. Don’t feel singled out. I just got off the phone with Brooklyn, with whom I had the same conversation. This is a major point of emphasis for our office this season.
“I have decided to use my authority to void all of your recent signings, as well as those of several other teams. This is not up for debate.
“It was suggested that the teams involved suffer penalties, such as losing draft picks, international pool money, etc. We are not going to do that this time, because our office should’ve been more vigilant. Going forward, however, there will be significant penalties for tampering.
“You are free to fully participate in free agency now. Good luck, Bob.
With that, the call disconnected. Breum was stunned. At 106, he’d seen a lot over the years, but this was a major blow. It was going to take him a while to absorb the impact of what just happened.
He picked up his phone and called Erik. He’d know what to do.

We're taking away all of the poutine as a penalty. Send it all to my offices in San Antonio.
