We Got Wood - 49.36 - Heating Up the Rivalry
In two days, the Lumberjacks will welcome to Portland their rivals from the north in Vancouver. Portland General Manager Chris Wilson, a long-time despiser of all things Vancouver, has already been sending jabs in the direction of the Mounties and did so again this week by announcing the team would have two special guests in attendance to toss out the first pitch at the pair of home games this week.
"Why sugar coat it" commented Wilson, "everyone in this league knows I hate those bastards. You'd be amazed at how many times Fernando and Jeffrey come and thank me for getting them out of that hell hole. And it's almost daily, I walk by Lugo and ask if he's gotten his check in the mail yet. We just laugh" added Wilson. The final jab over the fact Vancouver pays Lugo to play for Portland.
But to add a little extra spice to this long standing rivalry between Portland and Vancouver and Wilson versus the Mounties, Wilson has added two guests to throw out the first pitches.
"At Thursday's game, we've given Wally Geoghegan a day off from his gig in Quincy to toss out the first pitch. He said he was up to it. He was more than happy to since he has plenty of money after his $5.5 million payday last year with Cairo. And for Friday's game, we've invited back former Portland reliever Scotts Joe back to throw out the first pitch. We wondered if he'd accept, he has, considering the fact he was from Vancouver. But he realizes how bad that place is and wants to help this franchise beat those bastards any way he can, even if it means firing up the home town crowd with a toss from 60 feet."
It appears Wilson is slightly confused over who actually runs the team in Vancouver these days. The Geoghegan and Joe choices perhaps a reference to former Vancouver GM from the 1990s Joe Geoghegan. But the current Vancouver GM is Brett Schroeder.
"I know who the GM is" barked Wilson. "Brett's out there trying to save everyone's holiday season while Joe is off frolicking around the world in some resort destination. We'll be sure to tag that Schroeder guy in the SmackDown post after these games! Neither one of them is gonna know what has hit them after this series "
Well, that very well may be true. But damnit, I'll die on this fictional rivalry!

Wonderful article. I loved it.
Scotts Dale Joe. Love that too.
Now I almost feel bad about resigning the Cairo job.
But a new life adventure awaits.
Keep up the good work!

Always thought Seattle was Portland's natural rival, but a three-legged PNW rivalry makes some sense.
Then again, Portland seems to be picking fights with everybody lately.

Re: We Got Wood - 49.36 - Heating Up the Rivalry
Naturally Id say Portland-Seattle is the rivalry.
But I've been "picking fights" with Vancouver since the early 2000s when I was with Madison. Seemed there was a run of about 5-7 seasons where Madison and Vancouver would meet in the post-season. More times than not with Vancouver coming out on top. So it's been a running story line, off and on, with me and Vancouver for over 40 BBA seasons.

Does Gomez suffering a season ending injury meet the criteria? I feel it does!
