A six-man trade and a waiver claim; it had been a busy morning. I could be excused for taking a quick catnap at my desk before lunch. Honest, I was just resting my eyes...and before you know it, I was in the middle of a semi-erotic dream about a girl from my old high school I hadn't thought about in years.
Just as things in my dream world seemed to be progressing nicely, I was wakened by the voice of Alex Gonzalez, my assistant. "Hey boss, you want to go to El Taco Mysterioso with us for lunch?" This was a new development. Last year, my staff treated me like an incurable leper; now, after a busy and seemingly productive offseason, they treated me like something slightly better. Maybe a curable leper...
"No thanks Alex, I brown-bagged it today. Besides, the last time I ate there I walked around doubled over like Groucho Marx for two days. But come on in and sit down for a sec... I wanted to get your take on how we've been doing the last few weeks."
He chuckled. "Well boss, I'll say this for you; you've got some cojones. Trading a guy who was the first pick in the draft for a backup outfielder and some prospects."
"What, Sizemore? Yeah, I was just tired of waiting for him to blossom. Maybe he'll win 25 games with Rockville, and God bless him if he does, but my philosophy ultimately is that good players are the ones who play good. I can't put scouting reports on the field; I have to have guys who can produce."
"Same thing with the other two pitchers you traded- Hutchinson and Voermans?"
"Yep... I felt like we were running a garden hothouse, waiting for some rare orchid to finally bloom. At some point, you just say 'screw it' and dig them up and plant azaleas or irises or whatever those damn plants are that always grow."
"Well, it's gonna be different this year. I count that out of the starting nine plus the rotation, 10 of the 14 guys are going to be new acquisitions."
"And most of the other four are on shaky ground. It should be fun, Alex... We're probably still gonna be a rotten team, but we're gonna be our rotten team!"
