Spring Training Rolls through St. Patrick’s Day

Happy St Patrick’s Day. Spring Training rolls on. What has happened in Cairo since the new GM took over? Not a lot. Well, a free agent and a personnel change. Ho hum.

New Free Agents Joins Pharaohs
In somewhat surprising news, the Pharaohs have signed free agent pitcher Jorge Fuentes to a three-year deal for $2.2 million per year. Last year Fuentes was in the bullpen of the BBA Las Vegas Hustlers when he tore an elbow ligament in April. He was released by the Hustlers in January while still on the Injured List. He remains on the IL today. If all goes well, he will be ready to start pitching again in mid-April. Then he’ll probably have a rehab stint with Pretoria before joining the Pharaoh staff. If he’s right, he could be a key set-up man or even the Pharaoh closer.

The Pharaohs also signed 29-year-old catcher Ed Cooper to a minor league deal. If Cooper is placed on the Pharaoh roster in the first month of the regular season, his salary will be $800,000. If Chris Glass. A rule-five roster addition doesn’t work out, Cooper will probably take over as the backup backstop.

Personnel News
The team did fire and pay off its team trainer and brought on Iranian-born Duqaq Mohammed to replace him. Mohammed signed a three-year deal to make $325,000 through 2049. Apparently the move is part of a strategy to slowly improve the quality of the team’s personnel. Managers and coaches with contracts expiring in 2047 could find themselves on the market as the year progresses and the impact of their termination on this year’s expense burden lessens. That implies, of course, that there are talented managers/coaches on the market willing to move to the Middle East or to the various venues of the Cairo farm teams.

Conversely, AAA manager Cevat Alpay and AA manager Abdur Rahman Suhrawardi both had their contracts extended by three years through 2050. Alpay is rumored to be an eventual replacement for Cairo Manager Kevin Strong who has questionable relationships with numerous Cairo players.

That’s a wrap.

Las Vegas is a text book financial crush.
Not just baseball, mind you.
