We Got Wood - 44.32 - Burke out, Hill in as Hitting Coach

Post by 7teen » Tue Nov 10, 2020 11:20 am

After another season of finishing dead last in the Frick League in runs scored, the Portland Lumberjacks front office has decided to make a change at hitting coach heading into the 2045 season. Out is long-time hitting coach Bob Burke, who had been with the organization since 2040. His replacement will be Kenny Hill.

For Hill, it will be his first taste of big league action as a coach. The 52 year old Hill has been a hitting coach for 11 years, all in the minor leagues. He's spent time at nearly all levels in the minor leagues throughout his career. In 2034, he was hitting coach for a Vancouver farm team in Victoria. He surprisingly took a 4 year coaching hiatus from 2035-2039 before returning that year with in the Jacksonville system. He was a coach on their rookie league team that went to back to back post-seasons with Port Arthur. He got bumped up to Double-A and in 2041 was on another post-season staff.

"We like coaches with winning pasts" said Portland GM Chris Wilson. "We also felt we needed a change. Our offense has struggled the last few seasons and we fill Bob just wasn't reaching the hitters the way we had hoped. We were 4 runs worse than Sacramento for the worst in the league this season and 56 runs worse than the next club. We just need a change of some sort. Hopefully Hill is that change."

There are some who have doubts that Hill is the fix. Many fans think the offense just isn't that good and Hill can't do much. There are also many that wonder if Hill is the right fit. The coach with an average reputation around the league, tends to favor a smallball approach which may conflict with manager Pedro Medina's sabermetric approach. Still others wonder if this team is built to a "smallball" mentality right now.

Of course there are also those fans that think the hitting coach is irrelevant and this is just a ploy to create a team news which gains the organization 2 participation points which can be bundled into a purchase of more cash funds if needed this off-season. What all fans can agree on is they hope Portland can score more runs in 2045.
