BBA Today #57 - Fare thee well David Noburu

Post by Ted » Sat Oct 17, 2020 4:49 pm

Ron Collins and Ted Schmidt finally get their schedules together for a full podcast. We start with a look at the career of the one time Behemoth of the Jacksonville Juggernauts (<--rebranding idea), David Noburu. A review of the run of recent reciprocal transactions (trades) follows. "What's up with Phoenix?", asks Ron. "I don't care, but does Tyrone Biggums belong in the Hall of Fame?", replies Ted. Then there's some stuff about when do you try to win now and movie quotability.

Okay, so here's an old thing I did that is critical to understanding OOTP overall ratings. I realize now in reading it that I explain what I did in a confusing way, so here's a recap. I made a left handed batting "perfectly average" 50 potential player with no splits. Then I fiddled around with his versus left handed pitching ratings (the weak side of his platoon that you probably will bench him for anyway), leaving the ones that matter much more, his versus RHP ratings, the same. It was surprising how much the overall potential changed. If you want to really understand OOTP ratings, you need to understand this. Because it's me, it's wordy and confusing at times with a bunch of numbers. But read it. I'm happy to talk about it in slack with anyone. Understanding how splits and overall pot ratings work, if you don't already, will make you better at OOTP.

Less math, more examples of the above study.

Does this guy belong in the hall?

His old Crusaders picture was much more coke dust on the lips-ey. Miss that one.

Regarding overall ratings for platoon players, here are my Saturday day drinking thoughts:
  • Why should (or how could) the game assume a player would only platoon, therefore weighing his overall ratings more towards his beneficial handedness?
  • Merging 'vs LHP' and 'vs RHP' skills into overall ratings despite a likely platoon role adds some fog of war (or at least a mist of war that a good GM can see thru.)
  • Let's just say a platoon advantage is factored into overall ratings. Shouldn't the inability to play full-time just scale down the overall ratings away?
Thought exercise:
What overall rating would the game give to a 9/9/9/9/9 vs LHP (1/1/1/1/1 vs RHP) hitter in a league of 100% LHP? 80? 40? What should it give as an overall rating? Now what if all the southpaws disappear from the rapture and the league is 100% RHP...what overall rating should that same hitter get? 40? 20? What should it give as an overall rating?

I thought about the same things concerning McBride's injury. He will not get a chance for rehab before the playoffs to give a picture of how he will respond. If guys can perform well I can get lucky and ease him in during the playoffs.

I think you've nailed it. The game really can't. A lot of my older work comes across as too critical. Just because the overall rating has a lot of shortcomings doesn't mean OOTP sucks. Frankly, I'd rather have it the way it is an understand the limitations than have them try to bake in platoon stuff, for the very reasons in your thought exercise.

On recommendation, listened to this episode as a brand new person into the community, very well done! You guys bring the league to life. I thought your balance between speaking as if the league was a living and breathing thing along with acknowledging the aspects of the game, coding, does the game allow for x,y, z , etc. was struck just right.
