Sticking Points 2044.6: Rockville Draft Heavy On Catchers, Pitchers
Every pitch that's thrown requires two things: a pitcher, and a catcher. Rockville decided to draft a plethora of both in the 2044 amateur draft.
"We thought we should have pitchers who threw and catchers who caught," said Rockville GM Aaron Weiner. "At the same time we also hired hot dog vendors who vend hot dogs."
Rockville's top pick in the 2035 draft is projected to join the team as a catcher, not a first baseman: Manuel Moreno. Moreno is considered to be a strong offensive catcher but a poor defensive catcher.
"Moreno is one of the main people we would like to catch pitches," said Weiner. "He made us a pitch to play catcher."
With two of their next three picks, Rockville also drafted two high school starting pitchers, lefty Trey Raynor and righty Jeffrey Barry, both of whom may some day find the Rockville rotation if they succeed in the minor leagues.
"We like both guys," said Weiner. "We think they'll throw the balls that the catchers will catch."
Rockville also drafted catchers Gurm Guldenmond, Ilusuarte Markl, Gerald Hutchinson, and Luis Oolbekkink in rounds 2, 9, 10, and 11 respectively. Only Guldenmond, who projects as a backup catcher, is projected to possibly play a major league inning.
"We have a lot of minor league pitchers who also need people to catch their pitches," said Weiner. "We have a lot of people who catch pitches now."
Additionally, Rockville also drafted five pitchers in five rounds between rounds 3-7, Rob Hewitt, Ronnie Anderson, Dave Lovell, Carlos Acevedo, and Payton Jones. All are projected as possible future relievers, with the latter three all lefties.
"We feel like those guys could throw pitches," said Weiner. "The catchers we drafted can then catch those thrown pitches."
Rockville also drafted Antonio Castro in the S1 round, who presumably at some point will be called upon to catch the pitches thrown that the catcher doesn't catch, and might prevent other catchers from catching pitches that others throw. He's a second baseman who hits lefty.
"Other teams also have pitchers that pitch and catchers that catch those pitches," said Weiner. "We hope Antonio Castro will stop the second part from happening."

Even Eddie Feigner needed a first baseman and a shortstop.

“He made us a pitch to play catcher.”
Almost Shakespearean, really.

That was a promising start to Moreno's career, to say the least.

If the GM gets fired he can pitch this approach to other teams, and the idea will catch on.

I put him into short-season A because I figured a guy that developed shouldn't spend a day in rookie ball. He might be in high-A by the end of this year.
