Week of May 12th to May 18th

Albuquerque Coyotes 26-19, 2nd

@ Winnipeg Goldeyes L 0-4
Vs Death Valley Scorpions W 3-2, L 5-7, W 7-0
@ San Francisco Doves W 10-2, L 7-10, W 5-3

The week started badly when Coyotes lost the deciding game against the Goldeyes. Two runs in the third & two in the fifth for Winnipeg was enough as Albuquerque only recorded two hits. Back home against Death Valley Luis Ayala scored in the fourth innings to give Coyotes a 3-1 and Scorpions couldn’t come back from that. With Scorpions leading 4-3 going into the ninth they bust the game open, two doubles & a single scoring three more runs. Coyotes tried in the bottom of the ninth, but a 2-run homer from Aloisio Prudente was all they could manage. Albuquerque won the series decider with six runs in the Coyotes last three innings making it comfortable. Jesus Zapata, starting his first game of 2043, pitched into the sixth innings and Alfonso Archuleta took the shutout the rest of the way. Travelling to San Francisco Albuquerque kicked off with a big win. Coyotes were 2-1 up after three innings when multi-run homers from Luis Ayala & Chris Jenkins in the fourth and fifth innings helped to add seven runs, taking the game away from the Doves. Three runs in the bottom of the third left Doves with a 6-5 lead in game two and three runs in the bottom of the seventh for San Francisco took the game away from Albuquerque. In the series decider Aloisio Prudente’s 10th homer of the season tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the fifth. The Doves fell apart in the top of the ninth with an error, a wild pitch and a passed ball contributing to the two Coyote runs that won the game & series.

Pitcher of week: 23-yr-old starter John Antill won one of his two starts, pitching 15 innings. He allowed eight hits over the two starts, walked four and gave up two runs only. He struck out five batters

Batter of the week: 22-yr-old Chris Jenkins hit .400/.500/.800 in six games with a triple, a homer and two RBI. He walked three times, scored five runs and stole two bases.

Columbus Brown Sox 26-19, 1st

Vs Beloit Blue Sox W 2-1 (F/10), L 4-11, W 4-3
@ Weymouth Irish L 5-6 (F/12), W 9-2, L 4-5
@ Sioux City Xplorers L 3-4

It was a hard-battling week for the Brown Sox, two extra innings games and four losses, three of them by one run. Columbus scored a run in the bottom of the first in the “Battle of the Sox’s” but the Blue Sox tied the game in the fifth. It went to extras and Tony Johnston led off the bottom of the 10th with a triple before Brian Best hit a fly-ball deep enough to left to get Tony home for the walk-off run. Eight runs in the top of the first innings by Beloit made the second game a non-entity, Bill Burke tried his best, going 3-5 with two RBI and a run scored but it wasn’t near good enough. The series final was another close one, tied at 3-3 after six, it fell the way of Brown Sox when in the eighth a Stephen Chavez got Elmer Lomond home for what proved the winning run
Columbus headed off to Weymouth to face the Irish and helped by a Hector Garza 2-run shot in the first innings were 3-0 up after one innings. The Irish scored a hatful in the fourth & fifth though to lead 5-3. A Daniel Mares double in the ninth was able to tie the game at 5-5 and send the game to extras. Unfortunately, a double, walk and hit by pitch loaded the bases for Weymouth in the bottom of the 12th and the Irish were able to get the walk-off single. Eight Brown Sox came to bat in the third innings of the second game and three managed to score, the Irish quickly got it back to 3-2 but couldn’t get closer. A succession of 2-run innings took the game away from Weymouth. Charlie Lamont went 2-3 with a walk, scoring twice and driving three runs in. Francisco Perez improved his record to 6-0, getting away with walking five, but thanks to allowing only two hits he got away with giving up just two runs. Weymouth led 4-0 after five innings in the decider before Columbus turned four hits & a walk into four runs in the sixth. The Irish didn’t hang around though and a solo homer won the game for them in the seventh. In the final game of the week, Brown Sox headed for Sioux City. A 3-run homer for the Xplorers in the third helped them towards a four-run innings and the game. Late runs by Columbus brought them back to within one but that was as good as it got.

Pitcher of week: 22-yr-old reliever Carlos Rocha pitched in four games this week, picking up a win. He pitched a total of six innings, giving up six hits and a walk, but no runs and he struck out two.

Batter of week: 22-yr-old Bill Burke in six outs hit .350/.435/.400, walking twice and scoring three times. He drove in four runs as well.

Topeka Thunderbears 30-15, 1st

Vs Pahrump Ranchers W 4-1, W 5-1, W 8-6 (F/11)
@ Twin Falls White Pines W 5-1, L 0-2, W 9-2
Vs Springdale Roosters L 6-8

Five wins, including four convincing wins saw Topeka still top of the table. Against Pahrump the ranchers scored first in the top of the first innings but that was it for them, Thunderbears came back with three homers scattered through the game to score their four runs. Topeka’s three pitchers struck out 10 batters between them. It was much the same the next day as Ranchers scored once and Thunderbears sprinkled five runs around the game. Bartolo Deleon improved his record to 5-0 as he pitched into the eighth innings, allowing three hits & three walks, but striking out four and only allowing a single run. In the last game of the series Topeka completed the sweep, after tying the game in the bottom of the ninth, they were grateful for a walk-off 2-run homer from Dalton Hensley in the bottom of the 11th. In Twin Falls eight Thunderbear batters in the eighth innings scored three runs and blew the first game open. In the second game Topeka just couldn’t get the offence going and two triples from White Pines in the eighth got the winning runs home. The series was wrapped up when Topeka scored nine runs between the second & fourth innings. The week’s final game was back home against Springdale, leading 6-3 after three innings they couldn’t hold that. Five Rooster’s runs in the 6th & 7th turned the game around.
