Manager Jack Parkinson Retires

In a shock move to the Atlantic City Gamblers organization and fan base alike, manager Jack Parkinson has announced he will be retiring and will not lead the Gamblers moving forward. Gamblers' general manager Joshua Biddle assembled the media for a press conference alongside Parkinson, which was initially assumed to be a post-season presser, but instead was solely organized for the stunning announcement.

Parkinson started the conference off with the announcement -- "I know this may come as a surprise to people -- players, fans, … but I am here to announce I am retiring. I will not be the manager of the Atlantic City Gamblers in 2042."

Brief. Matter of fact. Blunt. It's not surprising that the manner in which Parkinson made the announcement is the way that players and fans alike will remember him. Parkinson reportedly had a conference call with the Gamblers' roster prior to conference, informing the team and talking more intimately about his rationale. Players were reportedly disappointed, but supportive.

Parkinson played in the minor leagues for the Seattle Storm organization in a seven-year career that spanned from 1998-2004, playing at the Rookie, Class-A, and Class-AA levels. Parkinson found the most success for Class-AA Juneau, where he finished his career hitting .270/.313/.389 with 117 runs scored, 58 doubles, 9 triples, 12 home runs, 122 RBIs, 24 stolen bases in 33 attempts (.727 success rate), and a 0.4 WAR in 1,019 plate appearances (332 games / 243 starts) across five seasons. Parkinson retired from professional baseball at age 27 after two years of free agency where he received no calls. It wasn't until twenty-seven years later in 2033 where he landed his first managerial gig.

Parkinson started his managerial career with the Gamblers organization, managing in the minor leagues for seven full seasons between Class-A Long Island and Class-AA Trenton between 2033 and 2039. Parkinson amassed a 210-181 (.537) record in three seasons with Class-A Long Island from 2033-2035 with one playoff appearance (2034); a 333-191 (.635) record in four seasons with Class-AA Trenton from 2036-2039, including a playoff appearance each season, and a championship and Manager of the Year Award in 2037.

Although his minor league success didn't translate to immediate success upon his promotion to manager of the Gamblers in 2040, the Gamblers showed progress in his two seasons as manager. The 67-95 (.414) finish in 2040 represented the first season of improvement from the organization's rock bottom 65-97 (.401) record in 2039 under BBBS Enterprises ownership. This was followed up by a much improved 2041 season, finishing 78-84 (.481). Offensively, the team scored 770 runs in 2040 and 949 runs in 2041, evidencing an ability to handle young talent at the major league level, some of which he managed in the minors.

Biddle said the following, "On behalf of the entire organization, Jack, we extend our sincerest gratitude to you for everything you've brought to this organization. When you interviewed years ago for a managerial job within our organization, the passion was obvious. We trusted you immediately with a managerial job at the Class-A level, which is a higher level than we would typically hire an unproven candidate, and you took off running. Ran a tight ship, certainly ruffled some feathers, but you got the most out of the talent you had at your disposal. That's all we could ask for. That's how you earned the opportunity with the Gamblers, and I think that element of your job performance certainly translated."

The Gamblers are expected to interview multiple candidates, with bench coach Mark Kidd an early favorite for the position.

With two Drake League titles on his mantle, Kidd certainly has an inside track.
