The 2042 Lumberjacks

Post by GoldenOne » Sat Mar 28, 2020 4:39 pm

What kind of a season did Portland have last year? Well, they increased their games won by 2 (total of 60), increased their team batting average by .009 (to .258), increased their team ERA by 0.39 (to 5,88; this one is not a good increase), increased their attendance by almost 700,000 people (over 3.1M), and ended the year just over $4M over budget. All-in-all, about what you would expect from a second-year expansion team. [Side note – being an expansion team is exciting and fun, but its also really hard. Its going to take a while to really build this thing up.]

How is 2042 looking though? Well, the Lumberjacks decided to start December with a little payroll slashing, over the long term especially by sending stud SP Feliciano Rafael to Charm City in return for SP Ray Herhoeve, SP Greg Brown, and 1B/DH Mario Guerrer. Two weeks later, it was RP Scotts Joe and CF Brandon Howeth-Arneson, Jr. heading to Long Beach for SP Corbin Valentin and CF Liann-wei Tong. Perhaps looking past 2042 and Guerrer’s Team Option, Portland decided to ship $1 (after wiping his nose with it) to San Fernando for 3B Juan Mendoza, LF Rodrigo Barbosa, and 2B Stephen Geloran, Jr. All-in-all, a gain of 4.1 WAR from 2041 stats while losing 3.9 WAR from the big league club, and a few badly needed prospects for the future.

Free Agency saw some more big movements for the Lumberjacks. RP Rahmat Subaido, RF Lionnel Crepin and C Paco Diaz in total added to a positive WAR for the team. However, the losses of RP Wen Huang, SP Bengt de Meza, C Heddie Veenman, RP Lee Morgan, 1B Manuel Núñez all were addition by subtraction. The one lone loss that hurt the Lumberjacks was 1B Jon Mick and his 2.8 WAR. Overall, with all the trades and FA, the Lumberjacks got 0.5 WAR better and added some minor league depth.

The 2042 Pitching Staff is going to struggle. Terrence Kelly will most likely be kept down in AAA to save an extra year of eligibility as opposed to maybe 1-2 extra wins for the season. The staff should be led by Ray Herhoeve. The Bullpen will need some luck this season but the interesting storyline will be seeing how Ernie Kinney makes the transition to relief pitching.

The offense looks like a nice mix of power and speed. With Guerrer and Mendoza manning the corners, and speedsters like SS Jaime Ramirez, 2B Tomás Valadez, and CF Miguel Cortez manning the middle of the field, Portland can hurt you in a few ways if you aren’t paying attention. And don’t forget about their solid catching corps with Paco Diaz and Dan Clapper that can provide some offense along with excellent defense.

When it comes right down to it, Portland will need to have some patience this year and try and keep those prospects down in AAA as long as they can. This is not the season they will need a shot-in-the-arm from a shiny new rookie. If they can stay away from the 100-loss season and keep their eyes on the future, that should be the goal for this season.

Thanks for the write-up Brett...

I personally think Portland is going to be worse this season than it was last season. Our pitching is horrendous and my decision to try and keep some younger guys down for one more year will likely cost us 2-5 wins this year but hopefully help us in 2043 and beyond. We'll see if that happens. Just too many guys I don't want to risk losing on waivers to make it worth it right now.

I do like how you and I both started these expansion teams off at the same time and are taking an entirely different approach to team building. The one thing I do like so far is the fact I'm keeping the team in the green and growing financially. If I can keep the trend in the green for another few years I think I can hopefully build a team that is competitive!

That's been my biggest objective too - to stay out of the red. Now, if I can just keep my owner from taking money from the coffers every season...

Who's still left with the team from the expansion draft?

Might be a good TN to dive into.

I know i still have several. Hard for me to keep track because I made so many trades in the first minutes, hours, and days after the draft I can’t recall who was drafted and who was traded for.

It would be an interesting League Feature to look back in a couple of years at the expansion draft to see what happened. In my mind, Charlotte and Portland are always going to be compared to one another.
