Istanbul returns home after a long road trip to face off against the Manama Pearls at the Grounds.

Game 1- The Manama Pearls steal a game in ninth scoring 2 runs off RP Bras Geisteras. RF Laurent Fernandez jumped a 1-1 cutter from Gesteiras and sent it screaming toward the left field foul pole for the lead. RP Gilberto Tovar came on in the bottom of the ninth to get the save.

SP Ramon Negron pitched 7 innings allowing 2 runs on 6 hits and 2 walks. He struck out 2 in a no decision.

C Ignacio Marrero was 2 for 4 in the loss as he drove in 2 runs.

Final score: Manama wins 4-2.

Game 2- Istanbul turns the tables on the Manama Pearls as RF Arthur Norris homers as the Bosphorus walk off the Pearls.

In the bottom of the ninth Norris crushed the first pitch from RP Alistair Grieves over the wall in left center.

Istanbul were also recipients of homers from SS Jose Lopez, 1B Kazuo Yamamoto and DH Patrick Lue .

SP Luis Tavares was hit around this game going 5 innings allowing 5 runs on 6 hits and 2 walks while striking out 2. He was let off the hook by good relief pitching by RP Bernardino Bertoletti ( 2.1 IP, 1 hit, K), RP Ismael Rivera (1.1 IP, 1 hit, BB, 2 K) and Bras Gesteiras (0.1 IP, BB, K and the W).


Final score: Istanbul wins 6-5.

Game 3- Manama Pearl DH Rhys Nornabell homers twice droving in 4 runs and leads the Pearls to a win in the rubber game vs the Istanbul Bosphorus.

Istanbul Star LF John Garcia also homers 2 times. He is hitting .303 with 38 homers and 90 RBI in his first season in the UMEBA.

SP Francis Wiles struggled in his start. He pitched 4 2/3 innings and gave up 5 runs on 6 hits and a walk. He struck out 1 in the loss. He falls to 12-7 with a 3.30 ERA

Final score: Manama wins 5-2.

Manama wins the series 2-1 and is 48-54 as of July 29th. The Pearls still trail Istanbul by 11 games.

Istanbul was 59-43.


Istanbul welcomed the Cairo Chariot Archers to the Grounds for a three game series.

Game 1- Istanbul gets homers from LF John Garcia (1-4), DH Patrick Lue (1-4) and CF Hector Correa (1-3, 2 RBI) as they cruise to a win in the first game.

2B Juan Rodriguez was 2 for 4 with 2 doubles and a run scored.

SP Charlie Simmons pitched 4 2/3 innings allowing 2 runs on 8 hits and no walks. He struck out 5 batters and threw 94 pitches.

Relievers Kunz Schuck (0.2 IP, 2 hits, BB), Jose Espinoza (1.1 IP, 2 BB, 2 K), Ismael Rivera (1.1 IP 1 hit) and Bras Gesteiras (1 IP, hit, 2 K and the save) stymied the Chariot Archer Offense.

Final score: Istanbul wins 5-2.

Game 2- Errors by 1B Kaz Yamamoto and 2B Juan Rodriguez contributed to 8 runs (3 earned) scored the final 2 innings as the Chariot Archers comeback from a run down for a big win.

LF John Garcia homered again going 1 for 3 with 2 RBI. He now has 40 bombs on the season.

SP Vladimir Reichel pitched 5 innings and gave up 3 runs on 7 hits and a walk. He struck out 5 in 85 pitches.

Cairo C Bungay Martin had the big hit of the game with a Grand Slam in the eighth off of RP Brendan Carr. He was 1 for 4 with a walk to go with the homer.

Final score: Cairo wins 11-4.

Game 3- The starters for Istanbul and Cairo struggle but Cairo’s Bullpen gets the job done as they take the series from the Bosphorus and gain a game in the standings.

SP Tae-kyun “Tommy” Chong pitched 5 2/3 innings and allowed 6 runs. He gave up 5 hits and a walk while striking out 4.

SP Ramon Negron pitched 2 1/3 innings and was hammered for 6 runs on 6 hits and 2 walks. He struck out 3. He falls to 4-1 with a 3.22 ERA.

DH Patrick Lue hits 2 homers in 4 ABs scoring 2 and driving in 4.

1B Kaz Yamamoto was 2 for 4 with a homer.


Final score: Cairo wins 9-6 and takes the series 2-1.

Cairo was 46-59 on August 1st 14 games back of Istanbul.

Istanbul was 60-45 leading 2nd Place Manama and Bagdad by 11 games.

The Bosphorus seem to be hitting a hard patch here of late - perhaps they got complacent with that big division lead? Maybe some laps around Sultanahmet Square would snap ‘em out of it!

Yessir! They are a little inconsistent. They put it all together one game then falls apart the next.

Maybe I am tinkering with lineups too much.
