The Blotter 1995.3

Mounties take another pitcher in round two

With our first round pick out of the way - we selected starter Ben Walsh 7th overall - the Vancouver Mounties turned their sights on their second selection, which came in at 31.

Much like our first pick, this one also featured some hand-wringing by the Mounties brass, most namely Leeu Lyons, who was bullish on several players, especially Jaiden France, a future supersub who can play several positions, but he was overruled by owner Kirk Pedersen.

Pedersen was overruled by the draft clock, which selected pitcher Eladio Beltran for the Mounties. While most owners would be upset with having their selection autopicked so early in the draft, it was a relief for Vancouver because Beltran was who Pedersen wanted all along.

Like Walsh, Beltran is a hard-throwing righthanded starter who mostly induces fly balls and should be ready in 1-2 years. The only concern is his lacking work ethic, which should be adjusted with a summer or two in New Westminster to cut his teeth against better competition.

Now we move on to round three, where another exciting young player gracefully falls down the draft charts and into Vancouver's clutches.

Another nice pickup for you, however, with Walsh and Beltran you better make damn sure you have a rangy outfield trio.

My third round pick hopefully addresses that need.
