Chasing The Storm 2040-3: The Offense Has Also Been Bad

It's important to be consistent: the Seattle Storm have taken that mantra to heart, as they have been awful on offense as well as on the mound in this magical 2040 season. Let's take a look at some of the many Seattle hitters that have underperformed this season, and see if we can figure out what happened.

I think it's fair to say that the two biggest disappointments for Seattle's offense this season are John Hickman and Lionnel Crepin. Hickman had long been one of Seattle's top players, and had never posted a wRC+ below 100 until 2039, when he posted a 96. Seattle fans were hoping this was just a blip, and that he would return to his previous performance. That has not happened. Instead, Hickman has gotten worse, and currently has a wRC+ of 89. Not to be outdone, after 5 straight season of posting an OPS above .900, Crepin appears to have forgotten how to hit, and has an OPS of .743. It is really difficult to succeed with those contributions from two hitters that had been counted on to anchor the offense.

With the exception of Todd Rice, who remains awesome, no one on Seattle can really be said to have overperformed their preseason expectations; when that happens, it shouldn't be a surprise to see a 57-95 record. Moving forward, it's not clear what Seattle's next steps should be. Without a return to form from the players hwo have anchored Seattle's lineups in the past, it will be difficult, if not impossible, for Seattle to return to playoff contention next season. I suppose we will have to wait and see what the future holds.

Trying to guess how much bounce back to expect from a down year is painful.
