De Castillo with game winner 40.7

Post by handaspencer » Wed Nov 20, 2019 9:22 am

In what will be a day to never be forgotten for Angel De Castillo it certainly ended better than when in started. De Castillo knew his name was going to be shopped hot and heavy at the trade deadline and he was being pawned as an asset for Montreal. To Montreal's credit they was transparent with De Castillo's agent and was keeping them in the loop. GM Spencer called his agent at 6:00 am on trade deadline morning and told him get ready your going to New Orleans. We are just working out the final details surrounding cash and or prospects but we are pretty confident your heading to a playoff contender. We are just waiting on confirmation to post to make it official and we are going to reach out to the other teams we had been talking with and tell them we found a deal we liked.

Throughout the day De Castillo kept calling is it official yet? No it was not official was the response as they was waiting for confirmation to post the trade. But don't worry we play New Orleans tonight so once it happens you can just switch locker rooms we can make this happen quick. About 2 hours before deadline Montreal received confirmation that New Orleans agreed to the deal so they posted. De Castillo hurry up and ran over to the New Orleans locker room and took batting practice with that team. He appeared happy and relieved and was excited for a playoff run. He even told teammates I can help you guys make a deep run into the playoffs.

Then GM Spencer's phone rang and it was New Orleans calling and they said we apologize but we have a misunderstanding of the trade details. We do not agree to send Roelof Klooster as part of this package. We misunderstand the details we discussed and did not realize he was being included. Although it was clear to GM Spencer it was not clear to New Orleans. This is the reason you have a double check process so GM Spencer told New Orleans go ahead and reject the deal because its obvious we was thinking 2 different things.

Is Montreal upset? absolutely not! Maintaining good GM relations is critical and important for future deals. Are we a little embarrassed, maybe a little because we posted something that we thought we had agreed upon. But maintaining GM relations is more important to us than acquiring talent that we like and we wanted to make sure that no bad blood could develop as a result of this. This was simply an honest mistake of communication and nothing more than that.

So GM Spencer called De Castillo's agent once again. We hate to inform you but your staying in Montreal. What do you mean staying in Montreal? You just traded him to New Orleans. Well New Orleans don't want you anymore they had a misunderstanding of the trade details. What!!!! Well we don't want to stay in Montreal anymore after this can you trade us somewhere else instead of playing for this hapless organization? Well no your staying in Montreal. We already broke off all talks earlier in the day because we had a potential deal in place and we have a family commitment in 15 minutes that will prevent us from working the phones to find you a new home so your staying.

Security had to escort De Castillo back to Montreal's locker room. I will find a way to get New Orleans back De Castillo shouted why would they not want me I can help that team win it all. In De Castillo's first at bat in the top of the 1st De Castillo slaps a line drive single into left field and puts Montreal up 1-0. De Castillo after making it to first throws his arms in the arm screaming to the top of his lungs and the boo birds come roaring from the home crowd. When he came back to the dugout he told his team I am not done boys I want more. He would get his opportunity in the top of the 15th inning in a 2-2 ballgame. With runners on 1st and 2nd DeCastillo steps to the plate and the boo birds returned. Well he slapped another single up the middle and drove in the go ahead run to put the Blazers up 3-2. A big smile was seen across De Castillo's face this time and it was relief and satisfaction of a long day.

After the game reporters begin to ask De Castillo about the emotions of the day. This was one of the longest days of my life. I am not going to lie I really wanted to go to New Orleans I felt they needed me and I wanted the opportunity to compete for a Landis. Yes at first I was upset at New Orleans because I felt rejected because they didn't want me. I feel like I am one of the top players in this game and rejection is hard for an athlete to swallow. But me and GM Spencer talked after the game and he was finally able to explain everything to me and it all made sense finally. New Orleans is a class organization and I do apologize for my unsportsman like actions in the top of the 1st toward that orgazation. The emotions was so raw and real and I didn't have time to get the details of exactly what happened so I took it personal. In addition I am excited to be with the Blazers organization this season and I like some of the talent that is here. This day will always be in my mind as a day that will never be forgotten.

that is hilarious how the trade ended up working out. That being said, the mixups happen. I remember I had one a few years ago with Chris Robillard in Edmonton where we mixed up with Juan Rodriguez was being traded... We have done multiple deals since then so clearly if you are both big boys it can be forgotten and just laughed about.

Life is a bit more beautiful when time is measured by the half inning rather than the half hour.

In a league I was in before I had 2 players with the same name Jorge Gonzalez. One Jorge was a solid starter the other was a borderline bench guy. I never thought about this during discussions. He posted the deal and I confirmed the deal without noticing he put the better Gonzalez in the deal. When I realized it after confirmation and the new file was loaded I questioned him about it. He refused to work with me and I had no leg to stand on because I confirmed it became my mistake. This always left a bad taste in my mouth and I never wanted to do a deal with that guy again because I felt he took advantage of me. Knowing how it feels to get ripped off it don't feel good and I am sensitive to others and I want them to be satisfied when they trade with us. Accidents happen and miscommunication can occur. I don't want to be that guy that comes across as misleading or untrustworthy. But how this worked out was hilarious and De Castillo certainly got the last laugh at least this game.
