Game 1 Notables: Madison Starter Juan Trujillo shut down the Chicago offense … like so many other pitchers have shut it down this season. Trujillo went 8.1 innings, allowing 4 hits, 1 run and 0 walks and 13 (!!!) strikeouts. Holy cats! PQS: 4 … The one PQS point Trujillo didn’t pick up was the one for allowing no homers. 1B Emilio Lugo was the spoiler there, launching his 11th of the season in the 4th inning. And that, folks, was the extent of Chicago’s offense … Player of the Game: Juan Trujillo … Cliché of the Game: “We’ll enjoy this win,” Trujillo said, “but there’s more we hope to accomplish.”

Game 2 Notables: The Sox broke a 5-game losing skid behind the pitching of Juan Nicto and the home run bats of 2B Rocky Wattson and CF Jim Lorenzen … Nicto had 5.0 IP, 6 hits allowed, 1 run, 1 walk and 3 Ks. PQS score: 2 … Wattson hit his 2-run homer in the 4th (his 9th of the year) while Lorenzen hit a solo shot in the 5th for his 14th of the season … Player of the Game: Rocky Wattson … Cliché of the Game: “It takes a lot of things to win a ballgame,” said Chicago Manager Bret Richards. “It’s usually not one thing.” How is this guy not president of MENSA?

Game 3 Notables: That warm fuzzy feeling of winning a game proved to be too much for the Sox, so they promptly dropped another one into the L column … SP Manuel Peña pitched a lousy game (5.0 innings, 3 hits, 4 runs, 3 walks, 3 Ks, PQS: 1), and the offense sputtered again … RF Manny Cleide tripled and there were a couple of doubles … and yawn, yawn, yawn … Player of the Game: Roberto Gracia, the Madison SP, who went 5.0 innings with 3 hits, 2 runs and 4 walks allowed and 2 Ks. PQS score: 2 … Cliché of the Game: “We played a good game and came out on top,” said Madison RF Mitch Dalrymple, a master of the obvious.

In Sum: The Sox broke a losing streak, but that’s about all you can say. They miss injured 1B Mark Simpson, who’s now gone for the season, and they have a starting rotation of, essentially, two guys. The Sox would be inclined to shut things down, start bringing up some minor leaguers to see how they do, etc., etc. … Except the AAA team is in post-season contention and the AA team isn’t exactly brimming with tantalizing prospects. Single A and lower are different stories, but those teams are either battling for their own post-season shots or their kids are too young to promote. So, this painful season will slog on awhile longer. Hope you brought your No-Doze …

If there's anything negative to say about the re-alignment is that I won't be able to read clichés by Boise players.
