Pineda to Arrive

The wait is over. After what essentially amounts to a year of pressure from fans across the globe, the Yellow Springs Nine announced today that top pitching prospect Carlos Pineda would be making the first start of his career this coming week, most likely in a game against the Pacific Division behemoth San Fernando—an offense that leads the league in pretty much every category worth mentioning.

“If you’re gonna throw a guy in to the depths, might as well make it an ocean,” said one team insider.

“I’m excited,” Pineda said.

The 6'1", 175 pound whippet throws a 100 MPH fastball to offset what some scouts call what will be one of the better change-ups in the league. A slider, curve ball and split-finger fastball complete his repertoire. At present, he's 8-3 in Indianapolis, with a 2.89 ERA. His 106/22 K/BB ratio (in 106 innings) suggests his ability to find the plate.

The call-up decision was predicated by an injury to relief pitcher Timofei Bakitski, and the sense that current starter Freddy Delgado’s 6.16 ERA is getting harder to watch.

“Freddy is a quality pitcher,” said manager Bill Inkster, “but we’re wondering if he might be better served to throw in relief.

FUTURE UNCLEAR

Given that several of the team’s baseball people suggest Pineda still has some growth remaining, the team wouldn’t commit to how long Pineda would be on the YS9 active roster, and in fact have, this season, been making it a habit to move players up and down the organization based on the opposition more often than in the past.

“We’ve got a very deep organization,” Inkster said. “I expect we’ll use it.”

He's not really done developing, and we're up 10+ games on the division. No reason to push too hard. He may be down again for a bit soon in order to limit his innings so he can pitch deeper into October. :)
