Since paying a king's ransom of $31 million in the international market, big things have been expected from Bing-de Zhao, now 20 years old. The first baseman - or is he a second baseman? - has finished laying waste to the minor leagues, because Zhao is now a major leaguer. The top ten prospect was called up this week to start at first base.
"We've been waiting for Bing for a while, and it's exciting to have him here," said outfielder Lorenzo Palacios. "He's going to be a big part of what we're doing here."
Zhao was hitting .311 at AAA Dodge City with an OPS near 1.000 in 68 starts this year, the best numbers he has had in the minors so far, while learning to play second base. He will start in the majors at first base, a position at which he has Yogi Zimmer potential, but is expected to move to second base within two weeks.
"Bing might be the best defensive first baseman in the world," said manager Duane Whitley. "He's amazing with a glove at first base. We're grateful to have him."
In response, the team sent down first baseman Willis Roberts. They also activated Djakapura Yani from the IL and sent down rookie reliever Raul Correa.
