This is what I thought, but didn't have the numbers to back it up. Ted's teams worked because they could just win 2-0 at home no matter how bad the offense was.
that is what happens when you have some of the best pitching staffs in the history of the BBA (and I do have the numbers to back that up).
That was the thing about Ted's construction. He built a pitcher's park, then staffed it with fundamentally great pitching. As noted in the media guide, a lot of guys try to use their park to patch over flaws in their roster construction.
it is funny because ted and I differ on a lot when it comes to how to build a team, but we are very much in lockstep on building teams to accentuate your park, not using the park to cover flaws.

One thing about Satino is that he's deeply under-performed through his career. Bottom line is that he's an ugly outfielder, so he's really a platoon DH...which is still useful--we've got George Robertson doing that, after all. But $5M/year for very good-not great platoon lefty isn't massively underpaid.

Even with 27-man rosters, the lack of splits reduces value (or, arguably the counter, a guy who doesn't need splits increases value) because then you Must Have a platoon partner--and that's not _always_ easy to get. It doesn't make their value zero, but it does reduce value because it increases risk. a LHB that can actually hit LHP is a big value. Or a real switch hitter.

But, yes, big splits are not that huge of an issue for a hitter as long as you don't expose them to their weaknesses.

David Simpson's current performance is a poster boy for this thing...he's currently a sub-replacement hitter against LHP, yet he's already gotten nearly 50 Plate Appearances against them. He'll still turn 4-5 WAR, and probably more in a peak year or two, but he's going to cost California wins against LHP.

The other issue is that an injury to one guy in a platoon creates a big hole. Sure, an injury to your full-time guy creates an issue, too, and a bigger one. But with a platoon you've got two guys who might get injured, whereas in a full-time guy you've only got to cross your fingers once.

The game most certainly assigns different injury proneness to different parts of a player's body.

I suppose there could be "hidden" things that goes into even further detail, but here's a snapshot from the player editor of one of my test leagues...

:)

Louisville is soon going to have Sanchez, Commie Child, and Browning. They are going to be pure nasty.

Des Moines may well be just as ugly to play with Smith, Karnes, Palmer, and a bumping Hashimoto (with Garcia as a #5).

The Heartland is going to be very, very tough very, very soon.

Re: Satino, he was down to a 50 current and potential rating at the time of arb hearings and subsequently bumped to 55 just before the spring this year. He put up a so-so line during his short time in Boise after I traded for him, so I was hoping to use the money saved in arbitration towards free agent pitching. Unfortunately it turned out that none of the top seven starting pitchers on the market would even engage in talks to me, so If I knew that going into arb, I would have thought more about possibly signing Satino. But I also had Felix Roman coming up, Ricardo Ruiz in the wings, and I still have a hard-on for my current left-hitting platoon guy in LF, Pedro Holguin, who's hitting .311/.386/.527 this year against righties.

In a perfect world, sure, I would have liked to have Satino at $4M for his leadership and maybe move him to a contender at the deadline, but I don't anyone saw his overall rating bump and his excellent start to the season, given his low AAV contract he signed in the winter.

Oh, and fun pod, fellas! I really enjoy the slow-burn over several hours by jumping from team to team, usually focusing on one player then expanding to the rest of the team. Really like how so many teams and players are discussed, as well as strategies and suggestions for fixes.

I also listened to the end. Why? To hear more about Jon Reed.

I have a few tidbits, not really stats:

Jon Reed drafts two kickers in fantasy football.
Jon Reed rips pages out of magazines and brings them to Supercuts.
Jon Reed raises both feet in the air when he puts on socks.
Jon Reed brings salad to a potluck BBQ.
Jon Reed prefers George Lazenby as James Bond.
Jon Reed still updates his Google+ page.
Jon Reed has a "Live, Laugh, Love" sign in his locker.
Jon Reed has a state quarter collection.
Jon Reed always says "Now let's do a funny one!" when taking group photos.
