Warehouse Wire 2040.02 - CCJ sign 2

Post by bcslouck » Thu Sep 19, 2019 8:02 pm

Charm City came into the offseason with intentions of spending money on free agents after a 77 win campaign in hopes to make a push back to postseason play. That first step has been put into action.

On December 4th, they signed corner OF Eliseu Satino to a 4 year $20,000,000 deal. The first 2 years are guaranteed with a player opt out after year 2. The last 2 years have team options. Satino is a career .307 hitter with a 122 OPS+. 2039 wasn't a great year for him but he has the ability to crush RHP pitching. He projects to bat toward the top of the lineup versus RHP while sitting most days versus LHP.

SP Maxime Manceau was signed on December 16th in hopes to get a solid veteran presence in a young rotation. His peripherals tend to be a little better than his overall numbers, but he's been a solid pitcher for a long time. The Jimmies hope he continues to produce as a solid mid rotation option to help stabilize a staff that has struggled in recent years. He signed for 2 years $16,000,000 with a player opt out after year 1 and year 2 being a team option.

By all accounts, the team isn't done. There have been rumors of talks with multiple teams about deals but none have brought about serious talks. They reportedly also have some interest in a couple more free agents. The team definitely has holes still that can't be filled from within at this time. For the most part, they are looking at shorter term deals to bridge the gap to some of the top prospects that are getting closer to ML ready. Some will be ready as soon as this year but the more impact ones are probably targeted for 2041.

Either way, it's clear that Charm City is open for business and may be ready to start making waves once again.

Man, reading that caused my fantasy baseball PTSD to flare up. Looking at his numbers, Manceau reminds me of exactly the type of late-round/$1 pitchers that I would constantly find on my team: a FIP always lower than ERA, a serviceable WHIP that won't kill your team's overall ratios, a BABIP higher than league-average but unfortunately they pitch to contact...you draft them hoping that someday their luck will be on their side and maybe -- just maybe -- they step up their swinging strike-rate to cause fewer balls to be hit in play. And year after year, they produce the same 'meh' results much to your chagrin.

For the longest time it was Esteban Loaiza. Then it was Ricky Nolasco. For the last two years it's been Nick Pivetta. Serviceable pitchers with hints of All-Star caliber talent, but they never could fully ascend to the next level of success, save for Loaiza's incredible Cy Young runner-up season.

Hopefully Manceau remains, as you put it, "a solid pitcher" and who knows? Maybe that '03 Loaiza-like jump is finally coming... 🤞

as a white sox fan I am pretty sure that 03 season was fueled by some artificial enhancements, so be careful what you wish for there....

Makes notes:

Satino goes for $5 million per year. Dempsey should go for under $3 million next season...... Got it.
