Tater Talk: 2039.45 – Week in Review, 8/25-8/31

Image WEEK IN REVIEW (2-4): Despite losing more games than they won, Boise ultimately played well, finding themselves tied or in the lead after the seventh inning in five of the six games during the week. After losing three games by one run last week, the Spuds had two more one-run losses and two two-run losses. Boise finds themselves just 4½ games back of the final Frick Wild Card spot in spite of their 66-70 record.

ORE-IDA® TATER-TOTS EMOJI SUMMARY OF THE WEEK: Image

HITTERS OF THE WEEK: Dennis French - 11-for-23, 3 HR, 7 RBI, 5 SB (.478 AVG, 1.432 OPS)

PITCHER OF THE WEEK: Egbert Behner - 1-0, 8 IP, 0 ER (0.00 ERA, 1.00 WHIP)

GAME OF THE WEEK: Boise prevented a series-sweep with a 2-0 victory over division-rival Calgary on August 29th. Egbert Behner provided eight solid innings of shutout ball before a trio of relievers struck out the side in the ninth inning to secure the win. The team's starting designated hitter, Carlos Muñóz, filled in at first base and provided all the offense needed with a two-out, two-run single in the fourth inning.

NEWS AND NOTES: Dennis French was awarded the first Player of the Month Award of his career after slashing .364/.433/.627 (1.060 OPS) with 13 stolen bases in August...the 2039 trade deadline went and gone, with Boise not making any moves..."We're going to roll the dice to see if we can claw and scratch our way into a Wild Card spot with the guys we got," manager Barrett Callahan told Treasure Valley Sports "[General Manager] Joe [Lederer] and I think the future is bright here and didn't want to ship out any of our young kids. If we make the post-season, great, but no matter what, it's been a real successful season for us."...there were moves before the deadline, however they were of the personnel, not player, level...Darryl Morton was fired as the manager of the Triple-A Salt Lake City Alpines after a 55-69 record during the year...replacing Morton in a permanent role is Damon Rutherford Jr., who was Boise's bench coach...Rutherford Jr., 62, has the full backing of Lederer and came highly regarded by Callahan to oversee the Alpines...replacing Rutherford Jr.'s role as bench coach for the Spuds is Johnathan Henry...Henry, 52, was the manager of the Annapolis Sailors, the Triple-A affiliate of Charm City, from 2037-2038 and was named Manager of the Year in 2037...additionally, Henry was manager of Team USA for the 2032 World Cup of Baseball...since his July 11th call-up from Triple-A, Pedro Holguín is slashing .307/.401/.412 in 41 games...sources believe contract extensions between Boise and Allan MacHugh have broken down and the catcher plans to test free agency in the off-season

DOWN ON THE FARM: During Rutherford Jr.'s debut as the new manager, Salt Lake City (AAA) went 5-1 during the week...in his last nine appearances, reliever Douglas van Osch has not allowed an earned run and has 21 K over those same 15 IP...OF Adam Parrish went 8-for-17 with four home runs during the week to pace the offense...Buffalo (AA) went 2-4 during the week and have just one game left for the year...Tulsa (A) also went 2-4 with one game remaining on the regular season schedule, with the low-point being one-hit by last-place Portsmouth on August 26th...Hot Springs (Short A) lost two of six during the week...2039 17th-round pick Jesús López hit two home runs during the week, upping his slash line in his first professional season to .307/.424/.533...Tijuana (Rookie) took five of seven to improve to 36-26, good enough for second place in the Mexican-American Division...with two games to go, the Cutthroats find themselves tied with Port Arthur for the Wild Card...after hitting just one home run in 58 games last season, 2B Tomàs Borges is tied for the Rookie League lead with 17 big flies

Hard to believe this is French's first player of the month. Of course, that will pale next to his ultimate "Player of the Phanerozoic Eon" (look it up!) trophy at the end of his career.
