Lynch Comes to Calgary! Landis Next?

In a huge move the Pioneers pulled off a deal that brings starting pitcher Bobby Lynch to Calgary. Lynch, a perennial Nebraska candidate, gives the team an ace and will anchor one of the top rotations in the league. The team had to send 6 of the team’s top 30 prospects to land the hurler, but if he can help them make a serious playoff run it will be worth the cost.

“Sometimes you gotta throw the dice,” GM Dickson said. “Like with the Puckett deal, this had been an on again off again negotiation, but in the end it came together in a day. The biggest obstacle was that they really wanted some guys that we wanted to keep, but we were finally able to work it out.”

At the time of the deal Lynch was set to become a free agent at the end of the season, but the team quickly inked him to a 6 year extension averaging over $17 million per year. That gives the team 3 big contracts with the possibility of a 4th. The team will likely have over half it’s salary cap invested in just 4 players.

With Lynch, Edwin Gilliam and Jefferson Pierce heading up the rotation, the team should be formidable if it makes the playoffs. Ken Bates and Mike Bragg round out the top 5. All are signed for next season and if Cristobal Hernandez comes back, this team should instill fear in their opponents. Despite trading away 3 good pitching prospects, the team held on to their top 4 starting pitchers in the farm system.

Lynch is the control master of the league and led Edmonton to their Landis win last year. His career mark is surprisingly only 61-53 and he has only won more than 15 games once. However a career 1.04 WHIP and 3.51 ERA are the numbers that matter more. His WHIP is the 8th best in league history. He won the Gillstrom award in 2033, has been an All Star 3 times and he has that Landis that Calgary desires. He averages 9 strikeouts for every walk he gives up. His .273 opponent OBA is the 4th best in league history.

The top prospect going to Edmonton is infielder Pepe Espinosa. The acquisition of Chip Puckett made Espinosa available, but he was the player the team didn’t want to part with. Espinosa projects to be a top middle infielder, with a good bat and glove, The Pioneers also sent starting pitchers Emilio Brazini, Edgardo Torres and Fekadu Bbosa in the deal. All three are major league prospects with Brazini having star potential. The team sent two other players to the Jackrabbits as well.

Congrats on pulling that trigger. It's going to be a fun "where are they now" TN in a couple years.
