Phantoms Phanatics Week in Review
April 29-May 5, 2039

As quick as you can say 2-5, the Huntsville Phantoms tumbled from over .500 to under .500 and from two games behind the division leader to 4.5 games last week. That’s what bad pitching and worse hitting will do for you. Both were on ample display during the Phantoms’ woeful 1-3 road trip to Mexico City, and then again during a 1-2 home series against California. Change, not surprisingly, is in the wind after that display …

Juan Alfonso, RP: 4 G, 3.2 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 4 Ks, 1 BB.

Game of the Week

Huntsville’s 5-1 win over Mexico City on April 30 was the lone bright spot in the Phantoms’ road trip south of the border. Starter Juan Nicto pitched 7.2 innings of solid ball, allowing 7 hits and 1 run while walking 3 and striking out 4. The victory ran Nicto’s record on the season to 5-0 with a 2.28 ERA, 1.5 WAR, and a 2.67 K/BB. LF Fernando Reyes led the offense, blasting a bases-clearing double to knock in 3 runs in the top of the 6th inning. 3B Victor Bedolla added a 2-run double later in the frame to cap the scoring.

News and Notes
After a month of largely ineffectual pitching in the middle of the rotation, SP Yu-bao Tong was optioned to the AAA Carolina Flight in hopes that he can work out his problems there. Tong was 2-3 with a 6.16 ERA in 30.2 IP … To fill his spot in the rotation, Huntsville called up José Carlos Solíz, who was 4-0 with a 2.88 ERA, 30 K’s and 11 BB’s in 40.2 innings of work for the Flight. Solíz was a 20-game winner a year ago for Jacksonville, but released by the Hurricanes at the end of the season when it appeared his skills had eroded enough to make re-signing him an unattractive option. Huntsville signed him to a minor league contract that became a $2.8 million deal should he be called to the major league roster. “We’ve been impressed by José Carlos during his time in Carolina, and look forward to him resuming his BBA career now in Huntsville,” said Phantoms GM Vic Caleca … Reliever Juan Alfonso, our current “Pitcher of the Week,” has yet to allow a run this season in 10.2 IP … 3B Victor Bedolla strained a hamstring on May 1, and is expected to be day-to-day for the next four weeks or so. The club has elected not to place him on the injured list, but to ride careful herd on his playing time in the weeks ahead. The injury was declared “minimal” by the team’s medical staff.

Carolina third baseman Albert Ayala leads the team in homers and RBIs, with 5 and 18, respectively. The Flight had another winning week, going 4-3 to raise their season record to 15-15, good for second place and 6 games out of first in the GL’s East Coast Division … AA Beloit had a 5-2 week, led by RF André Ly, who slashed .438/.526/.812. On the season now, Ly is slashing .316/.369/.579 … Grand Junction, the Phantoms’ A affiliate, went 4-3 last week to pull its season record back to .500. The Gold Sox are 1 game out of first in the PL West Central Division … 1B Aarnoud Budding continues to terrorize A-level pitching, now slashing .350/.391/.667 with 9 homers and 33 RBIs.

Wow, Budding is going off! Between him and Cochran, you have a nice 1B situation to figure out in a year or two.
