WHIV 2039.3- Searching for Diamonds in the Rough
WHIV 2039.3- Searching For Diamonds in the Rough
November 28, 2038
Free agency is upon us! In Las Vegas (with the exception of the last couple of years) that generally means a slew of minor league signings right out of the gate. This year didn't disappoint. "We always dig deep around this time of year to add some players to our minor league system that we think may have a chance of helping us, whether it's a remote chance or not," explained Hustlers GM Matt Rectenwald.
Without further ado it's time to take a look at the new faces in the Hustlers organization.
Signed free agent SP José Galindo to a minor league contract with a $10,000 signing bonus.
This 23 year old righty has electric stuff, but horrific control. "The arm was worth a $10K gamble," said Rectenwald.
Signed free agent CF Hervé Billy to a minor league contract.
Billy was one of the worst players in the BBA last year, with a -1.3 WAR. So what do the Hustlers want with him? Versatility and defense. "We can definitely see a scenario where he makes the 27-man roster," said Rectenwald.
Signed free agent SP Alfonso Colomo to a minor league contract.
23 years old with filthy stuff, three plus pitches and good control. Sounds like a prospect everyone would want, right? How then, do the Hustlers sign him without even giving a bonus? Two reasons: his injury history and his complete lack of movement. "We'll take the chance, maybe he'll get healthy and emerge," Rectenwald said.
Signed free agent RP Dean Rackham to a minor league contract with a $50,000 signing bonus.
Rackham received the largest signing bonus of any of the new additions. "He has all the makings of a real prospect," said Rectenwald. "We'll take a look at him both as a starter and a reliever."
Signed free agent C Robert Seybert to a minor league contract.
After not adding him to the 40-man roster, the Hustlers and Seybert quickly agreed that he should come back to the only pro organization he's known. "Rob is an organizational catcher, did a nice job last year, and we wanted him back," said Rectenwald.
Signed free agent RP Assi Leabua to a minor league contract with a $20,000 signing bonus.
Much like Seybert, the Hustlers wanted Leabua back but not enough to protect him from the Rule 5 draft. "We really need to see his curveball come along this year, to say it's a critical season for Assi is an understatement," Rectenwald said.
Signed free agent SP Carlos López to a minor league contract.
Once upon a time, back in 2031, Lopez was the 18th overall pick (by Jacksonville). Now he's organization filler.
Signed free agent LF Valerio Baiano to a minor league contract with a $10,000 signing bonus.

That's the name of the game! Nothing better than pulling a guy off the free agency trash heap, snatching in a Rule 5 draft or getting added into a draft as a "thrown in" to have him exceed expectations and provide positive value.

I really screwed up on Rackham. That's what I get for missing an export.

I thought he was on my 40 at some point but I guess not. If he was, I doubt I would of DFA'd him to get him off it.
