2039.01 TWC - 3B Chris Limon Released

3B Chris Limon
2038 Stats - .228 BA / .782 OPS / 23 HR's / 1.7 WAR - 2039 Salary - $16 Million

In a turn of events, the Twin Cities Front Office suddenly changed directions and released 3B Chris Limon instead of the rumored 2B Xue-Qin Man. It appears that the decision finanacially influenced as Chris Limon had one of his better seasons in recent years. However, the impact to the Twin Cities finances was $24 Million versus the $40 Million the team would have to eat if Man was released.

And most of that $24 Million would be this season as Limon is set to earn $16 Million this season, but has buyouts of $4 Million in the final years of his contract. So the money crunch Twin Cities is currently under will be limited to mainly the 2039 season and money should loosen up after that.

Another factor in the decision was two players.

The young, Joey Newhouse, made Limon expendable and severely cut into Chris's playing time the last two seasons. And there's be some signs that Man may be refinding his stroke and Man is a much more versatile player than Limon... However, Man has a long ways to go reclaim a spot as a everyday player.

But the Front Office is a holding out hope.

Interesting move. I think Man can still play a little, so the finances probably does make it work better this way.

That's why they pay you the big bucks, though.

The Chris Limon extension was my first mistake in this mess I'm currently in.... Definitely learning. I could have gotten a comp pick for him if I had let him walk back when his Arby years were done. He was asking for too much money.

The operations side of the game isn't too bad (Lineups, Roster moves, etc).... The financial side is... well, tough. Ted's recent posts were very helpful. A few seasons ago, I might have tried to keep Whitney too. I get too attached to these fantasy players.

Yes, yes. The game at its core is a financial sim...but if you're like me, you only learn about pretty much anything by making errors. :)

Something to consider: I have more experience than possibly anyone here and I continue to make financial mistakes.

You know... I've really paid attention to real MLB players progression this season (playing Fantasy Baseball).

It's rare that players produce consistent numbers year after year, except for a few high level exceptions. I don't know why I've never really noticed it before. Probably because I tend to only follow the local team (mostly).

There's huge fluctuations in a lot of player's production. Sure, there's players who seem to hit/pitch mostly the same every season. But that's not the norm.

The one thing I'd like to see in OOTP is more late bloomers. I know there's a few, but it seems there's a lot of MLB players who peak in their late 20's... unexpectedly.

Another thing... my Minor League is completely in the toilet and I really have no idea why. Outside of a lot of draft picks flaming out.... lol. Anothier aspect I need to figure out.

Regarding minors...it's all very hard to pinpoint, but I'd strongly suggest focusing on both playing time and success (stats). I don't think success drives talent boosts, but I've come to feel that success can influence ratings progression--which is important. Go take a look at with Alan's been doing in Brooklyn as an example of intense focus on playing time for max players.

In my world, if a guy I think has a reasonable shot of contributing at the big league level some day is not performing in a month or two, we'll send him back down until he is making it happen. Then he's back up.

---

And, yes, real player performance is all over the board, and varies in ways that OOTP generally mimics quite well. I spent almost all my time in the first ten years or so of my focus on the game tracking and measuring player development and stats output. On the whole, the game is very good at this. I think some of the more modern training and development methods may well be creating more later-career bumps than there has been in the past, expecially with pitchers. But I dunno anything for certain.

Per the podcast Matt and I did on minors...I literally spend 90% of my OOTP time on my own team focused on managing my minor league squads. If you really watch them that closely, you can almost sense when they're ready to push a number.

This probably explains why I can probably never manage more than one organization/league at a time, though. :)

Limon is still a somewhat productive player. Obviously not by his standards and certainly not worth the money. I can see him signing for a couple of million and making that GM feel good about it.
