WHIV 2038.20- The End of An Era?

The End of An Era?
September 2, 2038

The following monthly totals tell the story of a fading legend more than any number of words can say:
Batting AB H 2B 3B HR RBI R BB K SF SH HP AVG OBP SLG OPS
April 91 31 4 0 4 16 12 15 13 2 0 1 .341 .431 .516 .948
May 59 15 5 0 3 14 10 5 15 0 0 0 .254 .313 .492 .804
June 49 11 3 1 1 9 10 7 6 1 0 0 .224 .316 .388 .704
July 47 9 2 0 0 4 5 6 10 0 0 0 .191 .283 .234 .517
August 8 1 0 0 0 0 1 2 1 0 0 0 .125 .300 .125 .425

What started out as promising in April, went to acceptable in May, troubling in June, awful in July, and irrelevant in August. Who is this mystery player?

It's Las Vegas Hustlers legendary first baseman Gervasio Ridder. "It's tough to be in this position," said manager Edward Allen, who was a teammate of Ridder for many years. "He's one of the best players this franchise has ever seen and now I'm in the position of having to tell him he's not going to be in the lineup." Ridder was unceremoniously pulled from the starting lineup to start August and managed only eight at-bats the whole month of August. "As the manager, you have to make tough decisions that are in the best interests of the team. We have too many talented guys in the same position group and we also wanted to upgrade our outfield defense. I went to Gervasio and told him straight out that we were going to go with the kids for a while, but hang tight because a) I don't think you're done yet and b) we are going to need you at some point," explained Allen. "To his credit, he's kept his spirits up and hasn't complained. He's not a traditional leader, more of a lead by example guy. Always has been. Hasn't changed a bit."

The Hustlers have been blessed by the play of offseason free agent signing Carlos Camacho, who has been so good, in fact, that he is now ranked by BNN as the 20th best position player in the BBA. His center field defense has been acceptable, but not great. Las Vegas drafted a college kid in the second round of this year's draft, Tom Rudge, who showed early on that he wasn't going to be long for the minor leagues. In fact, he was the first position player from the 2038 draft to be called up. After giving Rudge a couple weeks as the left fielder, they then swapped Camacho and Rudge. Henry Rectenberg moved from DH to right field, more sure-handed than the player he swapped places with- Sadaharu Oh III. This new defensive minded alignment made it necessary to move Eliseu Satino from left field to first base. That leaves Ridder on the bench. "And that's not even mentioning Declan Crauen, who is coming back from the injured list and has no place to play," Allen said.

From a big picture perspective the Hustlers have to find a way to clear up this logjam for next season and beyond. Ridder still has at least two seasons on his contract. And from a pure scouts perspective, he still has the skills to play, at least against RHP.

"He's a franchise icon and probably a future Hall of Famer," said Hustlers GM Matt Rectenwald. "We need to figure this all out in the offseason. For now, he's being a team guy and I respect that."
