Re: 2038, BBA Draft Chatter
I went into the draft with the clear intent of drafting a starting pitcher. So naturally I took an outfielder.
Couldn’t pass THAT guy up.

Re: 2038, BBA Draft Chatter
This was hard for me. The OF bats that are left are just better players. But I've heavily taken corner OF and 1B recently and stuck to my guns on pitching.aaronweiner wrote: ↑Sat Apr 06, 2019 5:56 amI went into the draft with the clear intent of drafting a starting pitcher. It was Wattson v. Rice at my pick. The deciding factor was just organizational depth (strong CF, meh middle infield).Ted wrote: ↑Fri Apr 05, 2019 2:36 pmI can't believe that Todd Rice made it to Seattle. In a draft full of high upside but raw as can be corner OF's and DH's, here's a 19 year old lefty plus defending contact/gap power machine CF who could be an emergency player in the bigs right now, and probably be able to be a regular next season.

Re: 2038, BBA Draft Chatter
I somehow missed Rice. I think its because of a 70 potential and I didnt look down that far. I'm not sure I would have taken him over Donestavez, but i sure would have thought about it. Rice reminds me a lot of Tipper Kengos (who did pretty well in this league if you might recallagrudez wrote: ↑Sat Apr 06, 2019 7:46 amIt was Wattson v. Rice at my pick. Like that pick a lot, Ron. Was hoping to get him with my 2nd round comp.

Yeah, I like him a lot...or at least I like what he could turn into. YS9 fans aren't so sure: viewtopic.php?f=44&p=157886#p157886

Re: 2038, BBA Draft Chatter
I don't think Drew would've been absurd at #10. It's been discussed ad nauseum the liklihood of a high expected attrition rate in this draft class, so there is something pretty enticing about taking a "sure thing" with lesser potential.

Re: 2038, BBA Draft Chatter
To a lesser extent in terms of the development issues, this was my primary argument about Rice. He's literally one point across the board from being developed enough to play, and while maybe has less upside than ten or so bats taken ahead of him, he's still a CF who is almost guaranteed to make it with 10 contact upside and a good glove. A bunch of the guys taken ahead of him have current ratings of 2's and 3's.
I looked for a more developed player at my pick, but the talent dropoff at that point was going form a 70-75 pot guy to a 55-60 one, and that was too much for me. I saw a couple older pitchers, but they all had previous arm injuries. So I took a 17 year old raw pitcher.

Re: 2038, BBA Draft Chatter
It will be interesting to see how Rice and Drew's careers play out. Drew is a RHB with more power and patience. And he can possibly actually play 2B. Rice is better in CF, but if he loses an edge there, Drew could wind up being more valuable, even with Rice as a LHB. Rice get's the nod right now form best upside, but it could be closer than folks think.

Re: 2038, BBA Draft Chatter
Agree. I looked at Drew. If I was more convinced he could play second (the error rating scares me), I'd have taken him. It seems like this draft and the two before it were just exploding with corner OF. I'd wager a large amount that in five seasons or so they are going to have a very depressed market.RonCo wrote: ↑Sat Apr 06, 2019 10:13 pmIt will be interesting to see how Rice and Drew's careers play out. Re: 2038, BBA Draft Chatter
Drew's value plummets precipitously if you keep him at corner OF. You have to give him a chance at 2b.

Re: 2038, BBA Draft Chatter
I could see it either way. Drew is an elite LF today and can be taught to be an elite RF. He can be an above average 2B...and should be taught that, too. So I think his flexibility is a bigish deal overall.

Re: 2038, BBA Draft Chatter
He might be an above avg 2B, but he's gonna need at least two bumps to his error rating to do so. That's not unheard of. In my admittedly non scientific memory, that's the rating I have bump them most. The range, arm, etc are fine. But 5 error rating in the middle infield is not good. I'm a range>error guy, but there's a point where it doesn't work.

Re: 2038, BBA Draft Chatter
Let's say he's a .775 OPS. Would you rather that offense coming from an above average RF or a below average 2B*? That seems like pretty average offensive production from a corner OF, but solidly good from a 2B.
*Note: I don't actually think he'll be below average at 2B, but for the sake of argument...

Re: 2038, BBA Draft Chatter
I had to take HGH. With a 12 power potential I just couldn’t pass. He will probably lump, but I’d kick myself if he panned out and was on someone else’s team.

Re: 2038, BBA Draft Chatter
Alright, 3 picks away and he's still on the board. I can't believe I'm actually going to get him. With a 10 pp investment he's a top 5-10 sp in this draft available midway through the second. Welcome home, Ernes...
